Quesiton about 3.42 gears.

Hi everyone.

I have a couple of question for everyone. First of all I have a 01 v6 Camaro automatic. I'm of thinking purchasing some 3.42 gears. The things is I don't have any knowledge of differentials experience at all. Can I use 3.42 gears ring and pinion with the stock lsd or buy a newer lsd? How much would a manic charge me to do the upgrade, and how much HP gain I expended by doing these?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but if you have the Y87 package in that year [on an automatic], you already have 3.42 gears and LSD.

If not, you have 3.08s and an open differential [not LSD].
I would imagine 3.08-3.42 would be a nice gain in acceleration with a corresponding loss of a couple mpg, especially highway mpg. You don't actually gain any HP, but the car SHOULD accelerate faster.

Some folks find it easier to just install a complete rear end with the lsd and gear options you want, instead of piece by piece. Costs are nearly the same. [probably around $100 difference at most]

check your door codes to see what gears you have first. It should say GUx. GU6 is 3.42. thats the only one i can remember.

if its 3.08s than you would have to change the carrier to series 3 for any gears 3.23+. Also dont forget that your speedo will be off, so you would have to correct it with HPP3 or HPT or DHP.
I heard that its very noticeable acceleration on autos.

I too just ordered 3.42's. Is this the carrier that I need? I know its non posi, but I dont have the money for lsd right now.

i dont know about a 97, but i know my 00 is a 28 spline. and if yours is too then that diff wont work. correct me if im wrong

you dont have to have the y87 package to have 3.42's. i have them with my 01 v6 camaro and i dont have the y87/lsd

My door code says GU4 which is 3.08's if I'm not mistaken.

just for reference, when we switched from 3.23's to 3.42's, now the speedometer/odometer is 6.5% off

I dont have HP tuners, coud a dyno tune fix that?

dont think so
