I stopped by a local shop the other day looking for gear oil (M5) because sometimes at a stop its hard to put it in first. Even though the oil looked alright I have no idea when was the last change and I'm around 45k now, so it couldn't hurt. Problem is, the repair manual doesn't say what to use, and the guys at the shop had no idea at first. They asked the manager and he tells them its a synchromesh or some such and they have nothing I could use and I would probably have to get it direct from gm, and it would be expensive. I had grabbed some stuff they had that was supposed to help with hard shifting, they asked what the problem was, and they said it wouldn't help (Isn't that the whole sales pitch behind the product?). The all knowing manager said it must by my synchros or I'd have to replace the clutch. Fantastic split second diagnosis that was, didn't even ask if the clutch was slipping or the mileage or anything.

Anyways I'm having doubts about it being a gm only kinda thing. There must be a kind I can safely use. They seem to have viscousity ratings too. Does anyone know what I should be buying? Please be specific if possible. Also, would oil additive help? I believe it was Lucas transmission fix. I hate to even think that I need a tranny repair, money is tight as it is.

The manual transmissions just use Dexron III/Mercon ATF. Shouldn't need anything but that. It used to be hard for me to put mine in gear at a stop, and it was because my pilot bearing was shot. It could be many things, but might as well check the easy things first, like the tranny fluid.

I will go look for some today before work. Think using that particular additive may help?

The T-5 does NOT use synchromesh. If you want to try something rather boutique and designed specifically for manual transmissions [but with the DexronIII automatic transmission spec], take a look at this site:
