  • Popping noise from rear end?

Just as the title says, I have a popping noise that comes from the rear end when I let off the accelerator or turn a curve to the left. I tracked it down to the rear wheel on the passenger side. When I pull on the wheel, it "pops" in and out. Is it the axle bearing or possibly something else?

If so, I'll have an excuse to get those Moser axles I've been wanting.......hehe

I posted about a similar problem about a week ago...I have no idea what it is but it is a single loud pop on mine from the rear end, esp. when I turn.

I had a similar problem, but mine was in my rearend bearings. It poped my foot would be off the accelerator and id be slowint down. I had to have alll the rearend bearings replaced and some shims put in . Now the problem has been resolved thnax to my warranty. Our rearends are week and if you get on them one good time then it can wear things out.

It's been changed since the noise started.

Was there any metal in the fluid when you changed it? There is a possibility that you broke some teeth on the spider gears... I did this not too long ago. Otherwise I would say take it all apart, replace the axle bearings, carrier bearings, and pinion bearing.

Do you have posi? Is your car a 99 or newer? If you answered yes you have a Torsen limited slip unit. The Torsen posi's clunk all the time. Mine has clunked in turns and on deceleration since 50K. I had it inspected at a tranny place, they told me it's the cheap Torsen, and that is was a "normal" noise. I'm at 75K now with no issues. A lot of guys over at Ls1tech.com have had this, it's very common since all the V8's have posi, and everyone is told by the dealers it's normal. All the tranny place told me is that if there aren't any metal chips or flakes in the fluid then it's fine. You can change it again to check for that, and if it's clean, no worries.

Yeah, mine's been doing it forever too. That racket is about to drive me insane, so the cheap posi unit may soon be replaced..........

Re: Popping noise from rear end?

when the lca bushings go bad they are known to pop especially when turning. in case you guys done know these directly hold the rear axle in place.

its a common problem when you get into the higher miles(70k+)

You should look at the LCA and panhard bolts and at least make sure theyre tight enough.

Re: Popping noise from rear end?

I've had 2 Torsens and an Auburn and none of them made any noises.

The wheel moving in/out sounds like C-clip play. Can be the cause of squeaking too, when the axle shifts outward the rotor contacts the caliper bracket. Could be a bearing but those usually show up as lots of metal shavings on the cover magnet.

I guess I didnt read the whole thread.
A knocking noise you hear while coasting = normal.

My torsen knocks even with Redline heavy shockproof in there, and it's fine. Pulling on the wheel also makes the C-clips rattle :) Its normal. Dont make your car a BMW, it isn't!
