  • 3.42? 3.73? help!

has anyone changed from 3.08 to 3.42 or 3.73? what's needed? i was thinking going to 3.73, but after reading modification, i not sure. i asked some shop around here, they tell me i need to reflash the computer if i change the gears. they say it not only about speedo but the speed sensor, which controlls the shift points. thanks for any help.

last month i had my 3.08's switched out. I bought a Auburn Posi lock differential and Richmond 3.73's. It only cost me $375 for installation and the rebuild kit (bearings, gaskets and oil) i was in the same boat as you about 2 months ago debating on what gears to get...first i was set on 3.42's and then read about it and asked people and decided for 3.73's. Im very happy with the gear swap it made a huge difference however you will need a tune. I drove around for a month with my speedo off 20 MPH (have 18" rims so that threw it off more) and the odometer was off obv. Then i bought HP tuners and fixed everything. A shop could do it but im not sure how much they will charge you. You will be a little slower with 3.73's on a highway roll (65 and up) then with 3.08's but from a dead stop theres no comparisson. Also if your gonna go with new gears your better off looking on this board or ebay and getting a LSD or posi unit while you do the gear swap. 3.42's or 3.73's, people are happy with both. Either one are an upgrade.

more gear will always accelerate faster than less gear, at any speed.

at 65 im around the 2400 RPM range i believe...HP tuners is a Software that you can buy www.HPtuners.com and install it onto a laptop...then hooke up the laptop to your car and do tuning, gear changes etc. However, its pretty expensive. $500 for the software not including the laptop...so by the time you get a lap top (presuming used) your gonna be about 700$ just for something to tune yourself..i wouldnt reccommend HP tuners unless you plan on doing major mods in the future. You can just send out your PCM to the texas speed and have them do it...its like 150 or something
