  • Drive shaft question?

    Hi everyone.

I have a quick question. Does the 1998-02 v6 camaro and firebirds have a steel or aluminum shaft. Or GM only made the aluminum drive shaft for the SS, Z28, lt1 cars only? One more thing if I change to an aluminum drive shaft do I notice a big power different or not?

    Thanks.

    Re: Drive shaft question?

The V6 (most models) came with a 2 piece drive shaft (weak) , dont think they are aluminum (not sure tho). All the V8 drive shafts 98-02 are the Aluminum 1 piece which will defenetly help, not a BIG power increase tho but defenetly needed if you will be modding the car

I'm thinking of buying aluminum drive shaft, but I don't know if is wroth buying one with the current mod that I have now.

Here is a list of my mod.

2.5 flowmaster exhaust system, 3" car sound cat, K&N fuel injection kit, K&N oil filter, 10-30 royal purple oil, ngk iridium spark plug, Msd super conducted wires, and coming soon a hypertec programmer.

The mods you have done so far are nice but do not really affect the torque and HP that much so the stock one is fine until you change heads , cam etc. or go Turbo nitrous S/C then i would defenetly change it or it will DIE !! :P

if your changing gears and all that
then i would go ahead and get the driveshaft (Aluminum 1 piece Z28 or SS LS1)

              All V6es had steel shafts.
Some had a two-piece shaft. Later cars had a one-piece shaft.

There will be no power change when converting from a steel shaft to an aluminum shaft. There will be a significant weight decrease--most aluminum shafts weigh 50% less than equivalent steel shafts and there will be a slight, very slight increase in acceleration performance due to the lower inertia of the aluminum shift.

On "Camaro Performers" Magazine's V6 project car, we used an aluminum shaft from Inland Empire Driveline Service which is specifically designed to replace the steel shaft on V6 F-cars.
