  • Any tips on shifter install?

After inquiring on this board I purchased a Hurst pro billet shifter a Lou short stick, and a Hurst logo leather knob.

I am still waiting to recieve the Lou short stick but am wondering if there was any tips, do's or dont's involved in installing the shifter?

I went over the universityinstall link on my other thread but just wanted to make sure:)

Noticed the allen set screws on the shifter base for stopping 2nd and 3rd??

    Tips

I woudl do a fluid swap if you are close to doing one, since well you have the shifter off(drain below car, then fill up through the shifter hole when the shifter is off.

don't put the centerconsole back in until you get the stops adjusted to where you want.

That's the same exact setup I have, shift knob and all. I'm not running the set screws. One of them came loose on me and blocked me out of 2, 4, and reverse. After having to drive home shifting 1 to 3 in traffic I just took them out and left them out. Make sure the little plastic piece that goes on the end of the shifter is in good condition when you pull out your old shifter. There really isn't anything tricky about the install. Good luck!

This is the first time looking at the plastic shifter piece so am I looking for holes or tears or ?

I think I will leave out the set screws then also, dont need the hassle later.

Car has 19,000 on it and the owner changed the manual lube to synthetic when he bought it new. When should it get changed?

I wouldn't worry about the adjustment screws. I added a differnet nut, and just tightend them down tight. They stayed fine for ove a year and some hard shifts.

Just I tightend adjusted mine, to tight, then in a drive to the store it was wierd. I had to pull the console back off and adjust it just a little bit and it was fine. But I suggest doing a few small drives to make sure the screws are right before you take the time to put the console back in.

Just look over the little plastic cup and if it looks like it has a lot of wear replace it, but I doubt it will since you have such low milage. I did my shifter some where around 80k and mine looked fine.

If you leave in the screws just make sure they are where you need them and tight. I don't think they are really need, but if you put a beating on transmissions like shenanigans it wouldn't hurt to leave them in.

OK will leave them in, I plan on tearing into this project Sunday afternoon so I will post after the surgery

The directions say adjust those stops so they are half a turn away from hitting the stick, so thats where I will start.

              Thanks for the help!
