I just did my rearend swap the other day. It came out of a 2001 Trans Am with LSD and 3.42 gears, I bought it from some guy off of LS1tech for $450 shipped (FYI: shipping was $250).
It took us about 6 hours, but that is including time for swapping brakes and putting in my KYB shocks too. It was me and a friend of mine who is a professinal mechanic. We did it at the hobby shop on base with the use of a rotary lift which is a life saver!
Crappy part is that I have a kit for the drum-to-disk brake swap but the brake lines were different on the backing plates so for the time being I will have the old drums on there :( I am searching for either new backing plates or brake lines to fit. I also broke 2 bolts that attach the swaybar so I dont have a swaybar on it right now either.
Other than the brake line/backing plate issue, this was an easy swap! Eventhough the shipping was ridiculously expensive, it was still cheaper than buying a new diff, gears and paying for instalation. My buddy is a he11 of a mechanic, but he said he would not swap gears or the diff, only a whole rearend swap.
