  • and it broke

i knew it wasnt gonna last much longer. well it broke today. trans is gone. not sure what broke but i was driving along and while in third gear it just reved really quick and that was the end of that. lost third, put it in 4th and that worked but that was it. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and reverse didnt work. not sure if all those gears broke or i broke a thrust bearing and 4th worked for a little while. either way i need a new one. now a few questions

1: how much can i expect to pay for a junkyard transmission. im working at a shop so i have full use of the lift, air tools, and transmission jack so no labor fees for me.

2: what should i look for when getting a transmission for a junkyard? only v-6 camaro transmissions or will the old z-28 trans from the 80's work? or even mustang and t-5 truck transmissions?

3: im planning on keeping the broken one around and rebuilding it. are there any places that offer performance rebuild kits for our transmission. im going to UTI so i know how to rebuild it and want to "beef" it up a little bit since im planning on doing some major work here soon and the stock tranny will not handle it. plus i tend to drag race almost every weekend so i put some abuse on the transmission and pretty much the entire driveline. i remember hearing something about a company that did a performance rebuild but i cant remember the name.

sorry for the long post but theres a lot of questions i need answered. thanks

www.gforcetransmissions.com has performance rebuild kits that run at $1000 for our T-5.

well i got a new transmission today from the junkyard. $450 for a 5spd transmission form a 2001 firebird with only 29,000 miles on it. came with a new bellhousing, shifter, slave cylinder and all the mounts that bolt to the tranny like the torque arm mount and the one for the cat. i made out pretty good. found it on www.car-parts.com its a online junkyard inventory if anyone wants to check it out.

also are there any other performance rebiulb kits out there cuz $1000 for just a rebuild kit seems like way too much. i was thinking more like $500 max. is there anything else out there?
