High Miles & a Flush?

Ok, I know this has been asked a thousand times, but I just want someone else’s opinion.

I have a 97 with about 175k on it. I have only had the car for about 10k. I said to my self, ya, need to change the tranny fluid before I put any more miles on the her.

It is an auto, no slip when going up hills (as I have heard it described), however it DOES shift a bit ruff SOMETIMES going from first to second, and second to third if I have it at an aquard RPM. Others, perfectly smooth.

I have also read that if there is any smell (gas), discoloration, or flaking, that the tranny is gone, drive it as long as possible. It’s 2:00 am right now, and I have time tomorrow to get it flushed (if I do), and I will check the fluid first thing in the morning when it is bright.

Your thoughts?

Ok, well I checked the current fluid, looks great. No smell or discoloration at all. The gentlemen that had it before me took good care of it.

the thing is that if the trans has been driven for a LONG time w/o a change then flushing the system will dislodge all the gunk caked onto the gears and movey stuff. the problem with that is this: all that gunky stuff has kinda engrained itself in the trans and to an extent lubricates it. when you wash all that away, the parts dont fit together like they should and you can blow your trans in a matter of a few hundred miles. if its been flushed before, then you should be in good shape.
the stuff should be red. black means its old... really old. i dont know much about smells tho.

if this is the case, then you can get the fluid changed.

if the car has never had a fluid change, your just waiting to blow your tranny out

WOW, you are one of the ONLY people who i have seen posting this, which is EXACTLY how i see it also. Everyone here will fight with you and say you are wrong though

Ok, I took it in and got it flushed.

He said there was some minor flakes, and a small amount of sludge, but considering the mileage on the vehicle, nothing major.

SO! We’ll see if I have a car after a week or so....

Soo, lets say, worst case, it dies.

Currently, it’s an auto, if I go pickup a stick, and the center consol piece, is it difficult to change to a stick? Or does it require major re-work.

Just curious...
