      Re: diff stuff

Get the car on a level surface. *If you have to jack it up to get under it (which most of us do), try to get it propped up on all 4 corners and get it as level as possible.
The plug is on the passenger side, in front of the axle. Just look where the driveshaft is connected to the rear, and the plug is right behind it. A 3/8" ratchet fits it, but you'll probably need a small extension.

      As for the diff gasket:
Undo the 10 bolts slowly and remove it with a large catch-pan underneath so it'll catch all of the old fluid. Most of the time, you'll remove all of the bolts and the cover isn't moving...this is actually good. After all of the bolts are out, lightly tap the cover on the side and it'll come loose. Just keep a hand on it to prevent it from falling off and making a huge mess!

Dry off the cover, scrape the old gasket material with a razor or sandpaper, then install the new gasket. I apply a thin bead of silicone to the gasket as a precaution.

          Re: diff stuff

Good summary hockey, a couple extra tips:

I loosen the top couple bolts but don't take them out completely to keep the cover from dropping off when I'm removing. Once I've knocked it loose and the fluid's mostly out I'll finish them off.

Using a torque wrench when retightening the cover will help prevent leaks. Too loose lets fluid squeeze by, tight warps the cover and will also cause leaks.

With proper torque I haven't had to use RTV to keep it from leaking (which equals easier changeouts since there's no scraping)

            Forgot to add:
The bolts for the cover get re-torqued to 20-22 ft lbs (27-30 Nm). Torque them going in a clockwise pattern.

oh its alright. thanks again hockeyman and zlexxis. my car wont start sometimes and i think ive narrowed it down to it being a real dirty crankshaft position sensor so would anyone know how to change one out, clean it, or whatever it is i need to do? i think its just the part with the wires coming off it, plugs into the socket thing which is behind the crankshaft pulley. its real dirty and i keep cleaning it but power steering fluid i think is getting on it. p.o.s. car...
