4.10 gears in a v6?

Curious of how bad highway travel is for a manual 5-speed v6 (3.8), as per rpm's going from a 3.23 to a 4.10. The car is currently my daily driver, and I was curious how bad it would be. Thanks much.

I did the same switch in mine, but my car is an A4. Luckily, I never go on the highway. You should be ok though, I am usually at 2000 RPM at 50mph in 4th gear. You should be able to cruise at 65/70mph and still be around 2000.

4th gear with 3.23 gears is pretty close to 5th gear with 4.10 gears. 4.10 x .75 (5th gear ratio of M5) = 3.08 final drive ratio or exactly what 3rd gear in an auto with 3.08 rear gears will be. 3.23 is about 5% lower (higher RPM).

Try some highway driving leaving your car in 4th gear and you'll have a good idea what 4.10's in 5th gear will feel like.

I think the extra cost of gasoline will knock your socks off.
If we go to $4.00 a gallon by the end of the year, you will
be putting the OEM gear back in.

But doesnt the overdrive come in to play in the situation at all? Im guessing about 3200 rpm @ 60mph or so in 5th with a 4.10?

Overdrive is 5th gear which has a 0.75 ratio. 4th gear is direct drive (1.00 ratio). Its all just math --with stock size tires 26.2" dia for 235/55-16, tire RPM at 60MPH is 770RPM so at 60MPH:

- 3.23 rear in 4th gear = 770 x 3.23 x 1.00 = 2490RPM
- 3.23 rear in 5th gear = 770 x 3.23 x 0.75 = 1870RPM
- 4.10 rear in 4th gear = 770 x 4.10 x 1.00 = 3160RPM
- 4.10 rear in 5th gear = 770 x 4.10 x 0.75 = 2370RPM

So like I said before, 5th gear with 4.10 rear end gears will feel pretty much like 4th gear with 3.23 rear.

I just did a swap from 3.23 m5 to 3.73 posi m5. At 70mph I'm now turning 2500rpm in 5th gear. 2700rpm @ 75. If you do any freeway driving I would not go any steeper. I use hpp3 to correct to 3.42 gear and 24" tires to get close to the correct speedo reading. Before the swap 2250 rpm @75

Update:

Put my 4.10's in, and after having to replace my pinion seal (not a big deal) due to it leaking as soon as I was done, its awesome. I LOVE 4.10's. As long as your willing to back it down to 65ish on the highway for a few minutes to let the oil settle every now and then, its completely feezable for daily driving.

first you put in 4.10s to have a faster car. Then you need a high stall torque convertor to take advantage of the gears. Then you need a cam to take advantage of the gears and Torque convertor. Then you need heads and such to take advantage of the cam. Its never ending

Dude i just did the same exact thing. I love the new gears and i have run past alot of road side radar signs that tell you your speed and i would have to say its vertually perfect. I do 80mph alot on I-95 and im at 28-2900 rpm in 5th. My gas milage hasnt seemed to change either but im still testing that.

how'd you correct your speedo and your odometer? i have 4.10 gears and nobody knows how to correct it so I put a lot more miles on my car.

EASY you just gotta have a tuning program like HP Tuners or DHP.
Or you could get a mail order tune
or an HPP 3 but those are crap

If you have Hp T you just divide your tire size 26.1" by your gear ratio 4.10 = and enter in the number you come out with. EASY

I had my PCM reflashed and tuned for my gears (at the same time as I had it tuned for my cam) , but I guess the odo has a gear behind it I need to change or something? Because im still not getting an accurate reading.
