  • M5/clutch problem

I was driving up a hill tonight, went to shift into 3rd and it didnt go in all the way. so i push the clutch in and it will not go into 3rd and grinds profusely. finally it goes in, i let the clutch out and nothing happens. basicly like i was in neutral.

The car will not move in any gear, but the gears still feel like they are there. i can feel the shifter click into each gear. i have pedal pressure in the clutch, too. i dont have to push the clutch in to shift through the gears while its on. but when i let the clutch out and its in gear i can hear a slight hiss.

so i am assuming its the clutch, since i only grinded 3rd and none of the gears including reverse work. bad news is im broke, and this is my only car. i found a clutch kit on ebay for 180 shipped, with the clutch and tob. tomarrow ill see what i can do about the flywheel.

Sounds like your clutch needs to be replaced which is what you're doing. What clutch did you get? You should definetly replace the flywheel while you're at it. I replaced mine at the same time and went with the Spec Stage 3. What year car do you have? I helped my b/f install my clutch and since it's a 2000 LS1 we upgraded the hydraulics too. The most trouble I had was trying to help him hold that damn tranny...Its HEAVY!! Ugghh. This was the first LS1 clutch he installed....he'd installed LT1's. My stock clutch lasted about 67 k. Now the differential's being replaced this weekend...its held out for 69k.

I got an Exedy clutch off ebay for 180 bucks. its basicly oem. i wasnt planning on doing this so soon so i had to get what i could.

The car is a 2002 camaro with about 56k on it.

i still didnt get the tranny out all the way. i havent had a chance to mess with it. it ready to come out but i couldnt get the last top bolt on the driver side.

clutch will be here weds, slave cyl tues, and i have to order a flywheel.

                Re: M5/clutch problem

got it out saturday. was kinda suprised what i found. when i 1st got it off i notice what looked like fiberglass(felt like it to, my hands became so itchy). there was tons of it inside the pressure plate it was all over the edges. got it off and seen the clutch was bare, just bare metal. everything else looks good though. i was suprised cuz the clutch never slipped(well once or twice doin burnouts).

i could have had the flywheel resurface, but why? 50 bucks to resurface, 80 for a brand new one. even though im broke its worth it.

i didnt get a chance to take any pics getting it out but ill try to get some going back in. its not really hard to do, just hard to get to some of the bolts. the top 4 arent exaclty "easy". i used mustang eaters sticky as a referance.

Wow! I can't wait to see what mine looks like.
It still drives, but it slips and smells.

That car shouldnt have been able to move long before the clutch even got to that point. Its amazing. You def got your moneys worth on that clutch considering you used every last piece of friction material. Too bad you couldnt have kept driving until the rest of that metal turned to dust.

I didnt drive it down to that, it grenaded. the material must have gotten extremely hot while i was franticly engaging/disengaging it trying to keep it from grinding, and just sheered right off. i found all the material inside the bellhousing and pressure plate when i removed it, it was everywhere. thats why it all of a sudden quit working.
