  • T-5 rebuild

My recently installed second transmission is already starting to go downhill; 2nd is grinding often and popping out of gear, reverse makes a grinding sound when the car is moving, and the 1st gear synchro is out.

    SO.

I have my old T-5 sitting in the shed with inoperable 2nd and 3rd synchros. I have the option of getting this rebuilt. Is G-Force the only company that makes a rebuild kit for this transmission?

My second question is a bit more complicated...I know that Mustang GTs use a T-5. Does anyone know how different this transmission is from mine? Could a mustang tranny be adapted to my car? Could I use internals from a mustang T-5 in my tranny?

alot of the internals are the same..... if you go G-force you can not get your stock gear ratios tho........ however they can rebiuld your tranny

I'd be perfectly fine with different gear ratios. My only real criteria for this tranny is that it'll need to be able to hold up to 450 ft lbs. That's my power goal for this car. (forged/heads/cam/front swept turbo kit)

That's the best part about it! ;) Our stock T5 gear ratios are not optimal for performance. Plus, with those of us who have enough torque, lower crusing RPM's (1900 vs 2300) will be nice in overdrive!

I've posted a link below to a spreadsheet for you to compare the shift points of the stock T5 and the G-Force T5. You can see that the G-Force gear ratios put you at a much higher RPM at each shift. Going into 2nd at 3500 RPM's is a dog in my car, however, 4000 RPM's would be a huge improvement considering my peak torque rating is right around 4000 RPM's. :)

I also have the Mustang 5.0L T5 (Tremec part # 1352-249) gear ratios in there but be warned that it has a factory rating of 300 ft/lbs of torque max.

Hey, thanks for the post Jason! This is the kind of information I'm looking for. The data in the excel file is for the stock V6 Camaro transmission, right?

So you said you have Mustang gears in your tranny? Is that basically a drop in replacement for our gears? Did you just change the gears or are there other things you need to change?

Because, if I can fit Stang gears in my car, I'm sure I can find aftermarket gears for their T-5 that would be able to hold 450tq.

Ok, so I pluged in the ratios from the 1352-249 transmission, the one you said is from the 5.0 Mustang, with 3.73 rear. Wow...this is rediculous. 1st gear would go up to 40mph. Cruising at 80mph @ 2500rpm in 5th.

I suppose long gears would be the way to go for a turbo car though. I've heard that with long gears the engine loads in a better, more stable way which helps you boost better.

              Edit:

It doesn't look to me like any of the G-Force kits include synchros. What synchros are available for this transmission? Are the synchros something I can/should upgrade?

Yes... stock 5 speed manual is listed in the first worksheet or tab.

So you said you have Mustang gears in your tranny?
I could never perform such a sacrilegious act to my Chevy. ;) When I said, "in there," I meant the spreadsheet! :) I'm actually going to do the G-Force build when I decide to start driving my car again.

It doesn't look to me like any of the G-Force kits include synchros. What synchros are available for this transmission? Are the synchros something I can/should upgrade?
If you send the transmission to them, all worn out or broken parts will be repaired or replaced. They do sell syncros for $50 each. Check page 2 of their T5 price guide.

They also sell tranmission adapter plates. Have you asked them if their plate will allow us to use a T56 behind our 3.8L's? Maybe worthwhile to find out! This could be an alternative way out plus gain another gear! ;)

they didn't when i ask but it is not worth it...... thats why i swapped out to auto

you have to cut you the car because it moves the sifter back..... must have custom cross member made and custom lenth drive shaft..... plus t-56's are not cheap it cost less to go biult rossler auto

                          Re: T-5 rebuild

Whoops, yeah I overlooked that part of their pricing guide where they had the synchros. I'm actually asking that because I want to rebuild my old tranny myself, so I won't have G-force putting in replacements for me for whatever's broke. :p

Viper: What's the reasoning behind not going above 3.42 on the rear ratio?

So I'm at the "2.95 helical synchronized" kit, and one thing that is confusing me is the "2.95". Is that the 1st gear ratio of the kit? When I looked in the listing of all the gear ratios for the helical kit, http://www.g-forcetransmissions.com/t-5_ratio.htm it listed 2.94 as the 1st gear. Is this a typo or am I really missing something?
