Transmission problems on a 2001

Hi guys,
I read about the P1870 code in some other threads. Which does sound about right. I've had the car for right at 3 years. since about 6 to 8 months after i bought it, it has had a unsmooth 1-2 shift, I don't want to call it hard, b/c it doesn't jerk me or anything, but it's definetly not normal. Also, if i'm at a constant speed, say 40 or even 60 and then want to speed up slightly, it takes me putting the pedal down considerably and the car will shift up a gear and then the car will speed up faster. Otherwise, it's a real slow increase and it just sounds like it's laboring. I've assumed there was some type of transmission problem for a while, but until my "service engine soon" light came on recently I figured it wasn't a big problem. so anyway, now that the light is on, i'm assuming it's the P1870? Any comments or advice would be appreciated. THANKS.

your trans has an electronically controlled lock up torque converter
under proper conditions the cars computer(ecm) gives a signal to the trans to
apply converter lock up---when the converter does not lock up---thats the slipping that
throws the p1870-----your trans may need a lock up solenoid located in the valve body of the trans
or a torque converter----also verify the fluid level and color-----very dark reddish black fluid is an
indication of internal trans problems

It seams that the hot summer weather brings an increase in A4 transmission problems, especially those related to heat.

Start with managing the heat build up in the transmission. Replace the TCC valve using the Sonnax kit, Replace the trans fluid with synthetic (less friction..thus less heat) and filter, install a trans cooler.

I would bet that by doing this your transmission problems will be resolved.

Well like I said it's been doing this for about 2 1/2 years, now it may be worse in the summer, but it's present year round. About how much am I looking at spending to do all these things. I read about $300 for the Sonnax kit, and I know the fluid switch is not terribly expensive, but what about installing a trans cooler?

To install the sonnax kit, including fluid, filter, pan gasket and labour should cost you approx. $300.00 US.

The Sonnax kit alone is only about $40.00 US. My kit cost me $60.00 Canadian.

My Trans cooler also cost me $60.00 Canadian. I'm going to install it myself.
