  • 3.42's, 3.73's, or 4.10's

This winter while i'm storing my car I plan on putting different gears in it. Which ones should I go with? Right now I can get some 3.42's for dirt cheap that's the only reason why they are in this discussion. I want to get either 3.73's or 4.10's. Preferably 4.10's. This is my daily driver I don't really care about gas mileage but I want to be able to drive on the highway every once in a while. I have a 95 Camaro with a 3.4 and 5 speed. Right now at about 65mph it runs at about 2100 rpm. How much does it throw off you speedo?

if you want to go on the highway, I wouldnt go over 3.73s. 3.42s would probably be your best bet for a daily driver that goes on the highway. you must pay for your own gas huh?

I don't usually go on the highway. Just when I visit my parents and grandparents which is about once every couple of weeks and thats only for about 15 minutes one way. I pay for my own gas. I have to pay for everything for my car that's why I don't have to many mods yet. I don't really care about gas mileage bc I didn't buy a Camaro thinking about what kinda gas mileage I'd get. I wanted to get a z28 or a trans am but insurance would have killed me. Yeah I can pick up some 3.42's with 30,000 miles for only $20.

most people run 2000-2100RPM's at 65 or so. with 4:10's your looking at 2500-2600RPM's. you gas milage will suffer very noticeably. i'd go 3.73's.

I dunno...if you only do 15 minutes on the highway every couple weeks, I'd say get the 4.10s. You'll like them! :D

Yeah I'd love to get some 4.10's. Do you know anyone who is selling some for a good price? How much will that throw your speedo off? I'll prolly either get a mail in tuner or a chip.

when your doing 65ish your speedo will read 80ish. give or take a mph.

Yeah... I'll definately get a chip or a mail in tuner. What's better I haven't really done that much to my car yet so would a mail in tuner even be worth it? I got dual exhaust, intake, 160 thermostat, and underdrive pulleys.

I believe retunes are free (or at least really cheap), so it wouldn't be a waste of your money to go ahead and get the tune when you do your gears. You can get it updated as you do more stuff to your car.

How do I go about getting a mail in tune? Isn't there some place in Texas that you send you computer to and they reprogram it based on what you've done to your car (or something like that)?

dont buy used gears, im surprised no one has said this yet. it is worth the money to save and get new ones, its impossible to get used gears installed right. they will whine like crazy, and it just wont be fun driving with them.

I've got 4.10s in my car right now, and its my daily driver ('96 3.8) and they work great for me. Doing about 70 your at about 3,000rpm, as long as your not driving far, or your willing to let the rpms go down for a little bit so the oil doesnt gather, you'll be fine. As per mail tuning, I sent my PCM off when I did the cam install and had it reprogrammed for my cam, new speedo, and the gears, but my speedo still isnt right for the gear, I believe you have to replace a gear behind the speedo also? Idk. But, choosing between 3.73's and 4.10s is easy. If you want drivability no matter what, go with 3.73s, if you want all out acceleration get 4.10s.

Hell, I did the gear install myself, and they still whine, I havnt seen a single 4.10 geared car that doesnt whine. (Mine were new)
