i was talking to some guy today with an LS1 and he was telling me how he bought a set of 3.73s and an "install kit" from jegs...

what the heck in an install kit and do i need one do put in a set of 3.73s inplace of my 3.08s? i thought the just swapped out?

yes you probably need it. if the gear swap requires you swap the drive gear, the you will need a new crush sleeve. it will probably come with a new gasket for the cover and a pinion seal if you do need to replace it. hopefully some contact pattern paste also so you can make sure your contact pattern is correct still.

do you have to remove the drive gear? if so, do you have the tool to hold the yoke or an impact? you will have to press th bearing off and put it back on also.

I would help you if I lived by you, but it would end up being me doing all the work... not just teaching. Noone is gonna recommend you do your own gears.
FACT: It is TOTALLY worth it to have a shop install them! and I stand by that statement 100%!!
I can however give you links on how to install them

                      Re: 3.73 Installation Kit

kinda, no reason to upgrade the gears if you dont have an LSD/Posi
If youre gonna do it do it right, used LSDs are not that expensive

with 3.73s in an Open differential you will do burnouts real easy and not get
traction off the line. Of course the 3.73s are gonna limit your top end a little

What setup are you going for?
                      Drag race car?
                      Track car?
                      neither?

I'm gotta warn you its impossible to do it without the gear install kit. It might take you maybe like 10-15hrs. You might not even do it right
