I need to torque my harmonic balancer down.
I was thinking of putting the engine back onto the tranny and while its in park torque my harmonic balancer.
    Is this a bad idea?
I know my Haynes manual says not to turn the crank counter clockwise (probably to keep from damaging the tranny).
    thanks

there is a place between the starter and the block where you can access your flywheel, you can get a really thick screw driver in there to jam it. Thats what I did for my install.

The engine will still turn while the tranny is in park..........

but if the driveshaft is hooked up, i could put on the e-brake
definately will try the starter idea

you will always need to 'jam' the flywheel on an automatic tranny when you tighten/loosen the harmonic ballancer or the flexplate-torque convertor bolts. the motor will always spin free.

tools are made to bolt onto the fly wheel/engine to lock the flywheel in place but most people jam a srewdriver. just be patient and find a sweet spot to position the screwdriver.

if you are saying the motor is out of the engine right now for a rebuild or something....then you want to bolt on the flex plate to the engine and then install the engine. you want the torque converter to be on the tranny when you put the two units together. once they are together you can slide the torque convertor forward until it meets the flexplate and then turn the engine over with a wrench on the harmonic ballancer until the proper bolt holes on the T convertor line up with the flex plate. just remember that most flex plates are 'keyed'...they have four bolt holes but only line up in one particular postition. there should be markings on the flex plate and torque convertor to show what goes where....how they line up.

            Re: advanced tranny questions

i installed the flexplate/driveplate onto the engine.
then installed the torque convertor onto the flexplate/driveplate.
dropped the engine in. and tried to get the tranny to mate with the engine.

the tranny is like an inch on the top 2 bolts away from being flush with the engine. I've been trying to use c-clamps, but they just slide off

think I should take it all apart so I can put the T.C. (alone) in the tranny.
then mate the T.C. with the Driveplate?

              Re: advanced tranny questions

It is next to impossible to mate the engine and transmission together with the Torque Converter bolted to the engine/flexplate. This is because you need to randomly wiggle, spin, and push the torque convert until both the inner and outer splines finnaly engage and allows the TC to move into it's final position in the transmission.

Yes, remove the TC from the flexplate and install it into the transmission first. Then mate the engine to the transmission, and then rotate the torque converter until the attachment bolts align with the flexplate. Install the torque converter to flexplate attachment bolts with locktite.
