    Re: stays in 1st

    here are my test results:
    With the engine off:

From Park I can move the shifter all the way to 1st and the gear selector lever on the tranny actually goes to 1st.

If the gear selector on the tranny is in 1st (and so is my shifter) I try to move it to park, the tranny will stay in 1st.

Is the shifter pushrod bent or something???

      Re: stays in 1st

      In a nutshell: It will only shift from Park -> Neutral -> OD -> 3 -> 2 -> 1st
but it wont do the opposite!

You mean that you cannot move the shifter out of 1st towards Park?

          OR

You can move the shifter out of 1st and continue all the way to Park, but the transmission remains in 1st?

It will only shift from Park -> Neutral -> OD -> 3 -> 2 -> 1st USING THE SHIFTER! IT WONT DO THE OPPOSITE (shift up).

I can get under the car and move the tranny gear selector all the way up or down!

                Re: stays in 1st

When you removed your engine did you pull the trans with it. If I recall I thought you left the trans in the car cause you had difficulty mating the engine/torque converter to the trans when you were re-installing the engine.

Did you have the selector cable (from the shifter) disconnected from the trans input lever at any time? If you did, how did you do that... I mean what did you disconnect.

I suspect that you didn't put the selector cable attach bracket (where it bolts to the trans oil pan) back in the right position. It sounds like when you pull the shifter all the way to 1st the cable and trans input lever are aligning in a center lock (or over center) position that inhibits the return to park.

Make sure that bracket is put into the right position on the trans oil pan.

                  Re: stays in 1st

When I pulled the engine, I left the trans in the car.
But I tugged on the trans ALOT to get the TC to disconnect from the input shaft (the TC was still on the engine when I disconnected).
I'm sure this is the wrong method for disconnecting the tranny.
(You are supposed to unbolt the TC first)

I'm sure its the wire that connects from my hand shifter to the tranny-shift-gear-selector-lever. It was yanked on, its obvious.

                    Re: stays in 1st

I can see where the shifter cable goes up into the car, its all messed up.
The rubber plug came out, cause it was yanked on

                      Re: stays in 1st

Wow! If that rubber boot got pulled out chances are that upper cable attach point at the shifter is damaged. You'll have to remove the console and see whats up.

I will have to take off the console and reinstall the shifter pushrod cable obviously

Sounds like you may have striped your input shaft and/or sunshell. That's what was wrong with my car when mine wouldn't shift out of 1st. It wouldn't go into 2nd, 4th, OD, and reverse either. There's a HD kit out from GM because it's a known problem. Cost me around $600 parts/labor from the dealership. Goodluck
