Sounds like you've got a workaround to me. Hope you set your parking brake first!
... seriously, any luck?
NO it is NOT a work around! I wish! Even if I get under there and put the gear selector in Over Drive it will stay in 1st!
My only options are R N 1st is all I've seen so far
If you told me I bent my Input Shaft I would believe you! I cant believe they bend this easy though! I can get the tranny to fly in upper RPMS like 5000rpms! Wouldnt I know if it was bent? Wouldnt it shake like crazy?
thanks guys

Yeah but even if you did bend the input shaft, why would that cause the tranny to fail shifting out of 1st? Yes there would be some kind of vibration or shaking depending on the severity of the damage.
P R N 1st are mechanical selections, all of which work for you.
2nd, 3rd, 4th, and overdrive are electrical shifts, which are not occuring.
Check all of your electrical connections for damage or disconnections. DTCs might not be set if the conditions are not met.

I shouldn't have said overdrive, I meant TCC lockup

the rubber boot on the underside of the car where the shifter cable goes up through is broken. I KNOW that is my problem. How do I fix? JB Weld? lol
On the passenger's side of the tranny in the middle, there is a wire that is unconnected!! It appears to be a vaccuum cable but I'm sure its not, its just kinda thick.
That black plate that goes on the lower part of where the tranny and engine mates. What is that small plate for? It kinda reinforces the starter. I want to get rid of it. It is always totally in my way!!
How come, when I REALLY REALLY need a socket or a wrench it just disappears? I have everything except my 18mm socket and special wrench!
Need it to get the tranny off!

You gotta love the moment of discovery. Hopefully that's your problem.

Do you mean the black starter support bracket? A pic would help here.
I have the same fault, can only find things when I don't need them.

I'm still experiencing the staying in 1st problem!
It doesnt matter if I move the gear selector-shift lever ON the left side of the tranny up or down.. it will stay in 1st
the shift lever on the console will only move it down to 1st, not up

I guess my VSS isnt working (vehicle speed sensor)
which is in the trans
so MPH gauge doesnt work
Dont think the sensor is damaged. I dont think it was messed with
obviously 2nd, 3rd, and 4th is an electronic shift, and not manual
and that would explain why I can only get P R N and 1st
If I put it in Reverse or Park or Neutral, HP Tuners will still show that its in 1st

1st solve your shifter mechanical problem. Get that shifter working so that you can make all the selections going in either direction (from park to 1st and 1st all the way back to park)
2nd, fix that VSS. From the Mitchel repair Manual:
"Powertrain Control Module uses vehicle speed to determine shift timing and TCC apply and release."
3rd, now work on the position signal problem. I think this is probably a wiring issue (damaged wiring/connectors/terminals)
Now Playing: \'99 Pewter Firebird, stock, bone stock, and nothing but stock, so help me God!
Comming attractions: K&N Filter, Lid Mod, Intake Bellows Smooth Pipe Mod.
I dream about: Forced Induction (TC or SC) or NOX (or both!)
Let me explain why I think you have wiring issues:
1) Mechanical connection by flex-cable from the Shifter in the console to the transmission input lever.
2) Input level arm attaches to input shaft which runs into the sump/pan area of the transmission.
3) At the other end of, and attached to the input shaft (in the sump/pan area) is a detented cam. A roller that is attached to a spring steel plate, rides on the detent cam and not only gives the physical position feel feedback but also provides proper positioning for the selector valve piston (described in next item)
4) Also attached to the detent cam is a pushrod. The other end of the pushrod is attached to a fairly long piston. This piston is inserted into a bore in the valve body and together make up the selector valve.
So you can see so far that when you move the shifter, the flex-cable transmits the movement to the input lever arm, that rotates the input shaft, that causes the detent cam to also rotate and the spring/roller to move to the next detent in the detent cam, and also at the same time, push (or pull) the selector valve piston into the proper position.
Now what happens is that the selector valve piston will direct the hydraulic pressure and return pressures to the proper shift solenoids, but more importantly in your case, to the Transmission Fluid Pressure Manual Valve Position Switch. The hydraulic pressure from the selector valve is what activates the Position Switch, which sends the signal to the PCM to tell it what gear is selected. See there is no mechanical connection between what you selected with your shifter and the Position Switch which tells the PCM what gear is selected. It is a hydraulic function.
I’m betting that right now when you grab the input lever and select Drive, the selector valve is in fact going to the proper position, and the hydraulic pressure is being directed to the Position Switch, and that Switch is passing the signal to the PCM, But the PCM is not seeing that because (I suspect that) there is a wiring fault between the Position Switch and the PCM preventing the signal from getting through.
Couple this with a dead VSS and I can see why you only have 1st gear.
