I need to replace the tranny in my son's 94 bird. V6 3.4L with an automatic tranny. I talked to a salvage yard they said it has to be a 94 cuz of computer control. anyone here know what other car or truck can have this tranny. thanx

If it's an A4 and it's electronic shift, it must be a 4L60-E. Just get one out of anouther V6 FB or Camaro as they all have 4L60-Es. If you get one out of a V8 FB or Camaro, you can get it to work, but you would have to change the input shaft and bellhousing (swap them from your old trans).
Now Playing: \'99 Pewter Firebird, stock, bone stock, and nothing but stock, so help me God!
Comming attractions: K&N Filter, Lid Mod, Intake Bellows Smooth Pipe Mod.
I dream about: Forced Induction (TC or SC) or NOX (or both!)

      Re: Transmission Interchange

You're going to have to get one from a 94 or 95 V6 (I'm not sure how far back you can go... you might be able to use the 93 as well) as the with the change to the 3.8 in 96 it was a different bellhousing. But, as mentioned by CDNFB, you can't remove the bellhousing from an auto tranny like you can from a manual. At least not the 4L60Es. There might be an adapter plate or something out there.

Back in the old days of THM350s and 400s your right. But for todays tranys, specifically this one, actually you can.

When I was at a transmission rebuilding shop talking to my tranny guy about converting my 4L60E from the 3.8 V6 set up to fit a V8. He showed me 2 4L60E transmissions one for the V8 and one for the V6. The bellhousings were removable and interchangeable. In fact he showed me in his parts book that there are 3 different GM bellhousings that can be fitted to the transmission. The 3rd one I think was for SUV/Truck installation. Also there is anouther bellhousing that Nissan uses, cause they use this transmission in some of their cars (I don't know what engine/car model, but some of the trouble shooting guides that were printed out for me have Nissan printed all over them).

Seriously dude... this is the 4L60E waiting to go in my wife's old 95Z after we rebuilt it... where's the bolt on bellhousing?

And my 95 V6 didn't have one either. I'll look for pics of when I had that one out.

Maybe there is one on the 3.8s, but this guy doesn't have a 3.8.

Really? How can you tell? I mean the 4L60E rebuild kit worked out pretty good. Plus there is the plug on the other side.

So if it has a plug, on the top, it's a 4L60E?

                        Re: Transmission Interchange

Yeah, from what I was just looking at it was a 700R4 or 4L60 from 1982-1992 then went electro in 93 and was the 4L60E. But I did see pics of the removeable bellhousing, I stand corrected. Sorry for my ignorance. I just didn't know.

Maybe they started the bellhousing thing after 95? I will never figure out GM. What year is your tranny?

Not as hard as the oil cooler lines. LOL

You can see the green plug on the right. The one in my car is the same. Just the case is different.

                              I believe 93 z28s still had 700R4s...

not positive but I belive they did.

                              not sure about v6s.
