Well i'm pretty new to this website but i figure'd it would be a good place to get some information and tips from other camaro owners like me.....my camaro is a 1995 3.4 automatic............and i was reading the modifications encyclopedia and it said that lowering the gear ratio is one of the best modifications(acceleteration wise). So i was thinkin about gettin 3.42 gears from SLP and also a zexel-torsen differential......if anyone has information or results from changing to 3.42 gears PLEASE let me know....thanks in advance and peace

Re: new gears....
The easiest, cheapest thing to do is swap out the whole rearend from a Z or T/A with LSD and 3.42's. The swap is very easy to do and cheaper cuz if you wanted to just swap the gears and differential, its pretty hard to do yourself and quite expensive to pay a mechanic to do it.
Remember, you will need to get a tune to adjust your speedometer after a gear swap too.sigpic

Re: new gears....
You don't need a lift. I put a Trans Am axle in my old camaro with 2 jack stands, a floorjack + basic tools. It is quite easy. The hardest part is actully lifting the new axle off of the ground because it so damn awkward and heavy.99 WS6

Originally posted by rupps rice eateralright.....thanks alot with the comments, but how bad would my top speed and gas mileage be if i went up to 3.73's or would i see a big enough difference w/ 3.42's??
I cant give you any number or anything since i havent done the swap but a general rule of thumb...
If you do alot of freeway/highway driving, then 3.42's will be your best friend. If you do mostly city then go for the 3.73's. As for me, I drive 2 hours between cleveland and toledo for school on the turnpike, so i wont be going any lower than 3.42's.

Re: new gears....
I went from 3.08's to 3.42 and didnt really notice too much difference in gas mileage. I drive about 50/50 highway and city. However, I did notice a huge difference when launching my car though :burn:sigpic

Re: new gears....
ok...i rarely drive on the highway so i think im gonna go w/ the 3.73's. What kind of tuning chip did you guys use after and how easy was it........and also my car is completely stock except for a k&n cold air intake, should i wait until i add some more horsepower before swapping out the rear end or doesn't it matter???? I hope all the questions are nt getting annoying but i dont really know much about the "modding" process right now....lol. Thanks in advance
