I need to pull the Auto tranny from my 96 bird to do an overhaul. Started the process today and got the Torque Arm and driveshaft off, drained the tranny and unbolted the Torque Converter cover but have now hit a major barrier.
How to get the cover out!
I have a Haynes manual, but the picture shows the V8 (as that's the model they used for teardown), and doesn't cover the procedure for the 3.8.
Have any of you 3.8 owners separated the tranny from engine and if so, how the heck did you get the cover out.
There are nine bolts that hold it in place. From what I can see, there are a couple of brackets that come down from either side of the block that appear to be blocking removal. One of which goes up behind the starter motor and I can't really see a way of getting that off. I can see the bolts holding the other in place, but access to them is extremely restricted and I was having trouble getting good purchase on the bolts. Do I need to remove one, or both, of these to get the cover off?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers guys.
