I have a 1995 camaro with a 3.4 with a 5 spd man. trans for some reason you cannot put it in reverse without it grinding first unless you put it in another gear first and also once you get it and and you are backing up once you let the clutch out so far it will pop right out of gear its really frustrating any help would be high appriciated! i also call AAMCO and asked if they knew what it could be and they didnt even know and i was also told its not a syncronizer because there are none in reverse?

Re: transmission grinding and popping out of gear can anyone help?
ammco is correct, reverse on the T5 tranny is NOT a syncronized gear. 99% of people that have this tranny have that problem. i just go into 4th before i go into reverse, no big deal. as for popping out of gear, i dont really know. i thought that usally meant your tranny was on its way out?1998 bright red camaro ,M5 ,Y87 ,stock<br /><br />Originally posted by Rune:<br />If it smells like a turd and looks like a turd, chances are its probably not a candy bar.

Re: transmission grinding and popping out of gear can anyone help?
that is correct.. grinding going into reverse is common.. i like to put the transmission into 5th before reverse... seems to work for me..
as for popping out of gear.. are you sure you are engaging reverse fully? I know that if i do not get it all the way into reverse, my trans will also come out of gear right after i start moving (while im letting otu the clutch like you said)... just make sure you properly engage the gear..
also, do you have an aftermarket shifter on your car? If so, it might not be adjusted correctly.Phill<br /><br />95 camaro... need money for turbo project... <br />94 S10 Blazer - winter beater - infinity system to be installed soon<br /><br />\"The man who says it cant be done should not interrupt the man doing it...\"

Half the people I talk to tell me its one of the first signs your clutch is failing. The other half don't have a clue. I do know that on a brand new clutch I never have this problem.
To fix it temporarily, start the car up and pump the clutch about 2-4 times (all the way in all the way out). Put the car into 5th gear and bring it back out again. Pump the clutch a little more. Put into into 5th gear and then bring it back into reverse. If you don't go ALL the way into reverse it will spit your stick out quicker then an angry girlfriend.00\' firebird v6 5spd<br />201rwhp ---- 230 rwtq<br />\"Everyday I grow stronger...and further from you.\"<br />WARNING: Do not take any of my comments seriously unless they are technical in nature and then only at your own risk

I have the exact same problem in the same car. I have noticed that if the the engine is even slightly reved it will not go into reverse. so you know how when you first start your car and it revs up a little? wait for the rpm's to go down before you try to put it into reverse. this usually works for me.

Re: transmission grinding and popping out of gear can anyone help?
i just recently bought another tranny and it also shortly had the same problem of jumping out of reverse so i got pissed and rebuilt it and upon disassembling my tranny i figured the problem. if you are interested in getting it fixed email me at camarouti9407@yahoo.com and i can let you know exactly wat is wrong from my experience of rebuilding 5 with the same problem.cant wait till my lt1 and nitrous.

Re: transmission grinding and popping out of gear can anyone help?
busted shiftforks? T5 is a hydraulic clutching system and the shift linkages are internal. Clutch problems would cause gear clash in all gears, not just reverse because the clutch would not be fully engaging or disengaging causing the transmission to still have power while trying to shift. The problem must do with the shift linkages. GM prolly has a plastic 5th/Reverse shift fork ( cheap bastards ) that wears/breaks over time. This would be my guess as to whats wrong. The T5 doesn't use a synchro for reverse because it is a straight cut ( spiral bevel, which just move and mesh with the rest of the reverse gears ) gear, not a helical like the rest of the forward gears. Therefore eliminating a synchro. It can't be bearings either, because bad input/output shaft bearings would cause noise or the trans to jump out of gear in all gears rather than just R.
My best guess is shift forks, or something to do with the shift linkage. Please tell me if I am wrong99 WS6

no the 3rd and 4th gear selector synchro assembly has three metal inserts and they tend to fall out and get caught in the reverse idler gear since it is lowest in the case and chips it and since it is chipped it wants to throw out and when you hold it in it just makes it works. the shift forks are all metalcant wait till my lt1 and nitrous.

How could the keys fall out of the synchro assembly though? And that would cause the 3-4 synchro assembly to not function. Those keys are a vital part of the synchro. They push the blocking ring up on the cone and slow it down so the synchro sleeve can catch the gear.
I'm not trying to start a fight, i'm just curious about this problem.99 WS6

Re: transmission grinding and popping out of gear can anyone help?
i appologize. in that short time inbetween my last post and this one i dissassembled my tranny i just took out and i discovered the inserts intact. but the 1st and 2nd gear selector and the reverse idler gear destroyed. i guess its just from wear and the metals not being strong enough. it takes usually till about 120000 miles before it does it so i gather.cant wait till my lt1 and nitrous.

Re: transmission grinding and popping out of gear can anyone help?
i just dissassembled the tranny i have as a spare and i foud the inserts intact. but in my first one they were not there but the 3rd and 4th gear still worked fine. i dunno. but from what i see i guess that over time the 2nd and 1st gear selector engaging with the reverse idler gear wear out and cause it to chip teeth. thats why it pops out. i have pics of my first set of selector and idler gear and you can see the damage really well. let me know your email and ill send the pics to youcant wait till my lt1 and nitrous.
