I've got a 94 3.4 camaro vert'. I recently had a local shop quote me a gear swap for $530. The dude said 250 for labor, 180 for the 3.42s and 100 for the bearing seals and whatnot. I would like to know some common prices for this swap and for the gears. Also will switching from 3.23s give me that big of a performance gain and will it suck down my gas mileage. And what can i do for the speedometer correction? I was thinking of faschip tune but the guy said they can put in another gear or something to correct the speedo.
With my newfound 3.42's I get 27 mpg highway and about 20-22 city. As for speedo recalibration your best bet would be a mail tune so they could tune for the gears, remove the top speed limiter and maximize your stock setup. Don't know about shop costs on that stuff though.
Let's flip a coin. Heads I get tail, Tails I get head.
Those prices seem reasonable. But you don't want to drop $500+ to go from an open 3.23 to an open 3.42 - it just isn't worth it.
Go find a local 93-02 Fbody rear from a V8 6-speed car and pay $200-$250 for it. You'll get 3.42's, limited slip and disc brakes all together. Plus you can do the swap yourself with a little muscle.
I still get 27mpg highway with 3.73's and tuning. The speedo recalibration can't be done with a gear. For an auto you can get the Jet SCU2000 but for a manual the only option is Fastchip.

Any writeups on swaping the rear. I don't think that could be done in a driveway though. Is there any problems with brakes? I know i have rear drums. So would the abs still work? Do you have to modify anyting else to swap in a V8 rear?
If you pick up a rear end that has ABS, Traction control, disc brakes and the right gears and limited sllip it should be just a bolt on. You could do it in a driveway just make sure you got space to work and the right tools. Nothing more aggrivating then getting into a project and realizing you don't have what you need. Hey if your doing that much pick up an aluminum driveshaft to maximize the upgrade your doing.

You want a rear without traction control (RPO NW9) and yes it can be done in your driveway, that's where I did mine. Check my site for a writeup. The ABS plug is the same and so is the brake line, you'll just have to bleed the rears when you're done. Other than that it's just a bunch of rusty bolts and the e-brake cables.

I called around at many junkyards and the best price i could find was 450 for a 94 z28 rear.
What do you guys think?

Look on V8 board classifieds and post in Parts Wanted sections. Keep checking eBay for local parts. You can do much better than salvage yard prices. I got my first rear for $250 and my second for less than $200.
