A few names that I know off hand that are the same exact thing in this category are:
    Limited Slip Differential
    Posi (Posi-Traction)
Traction-Loc and maybe Detroit Locker(same concept, but someone has stated that it possibly may have a few different parts in it)
    Sure Grip

These are all the same thing, just different companies naming them to suit them better I would suppose.
lsd & posi both use clutch pack one wheel spins heats the disks they catch and the other wheel joins in
locking diff use inner locking teeth that "LOCK" together no initial slip like with a lsd but lockers will give you the same effect as welding the spider gears hoping and chirping around corners (a good one will seperate around corners and click saving your tires)
do not weld you spiders though you'll regreat it when it granades on the freeway and causes a 52 car pickup :)

just dropping the old out and throwing in the new, not that hard to do. Then you need to tune your PCM for the new gears unless you like your speedo and mileage to be way off

how exactly do you racalibrate it?? im considering swapping the rear end out for the better gearing, lsd, and then ill have disc brakes in the back too.. will that all just go right in? would I have to do anything with the brakes?

And eat tires & handle like **** & brake a axle & probably get you killed in the rain.

Re: cheap ways to get both wheels spinning?

                    Well, if any one cares...

Limited slip differential is the general term, which covers a variety of types of LSDs.

Positraction is GM's advertising term for a clutch pack LSD. There's also a Torsen LSD in later year fbodies.

A locker is a brute force type of LSD with very harsh action. Two types of people use them, offroad, where the tire slippage makes them less harsh, and where the rules permit no other type of LSD (NASCAR). They're not good for street use.

Welding the spider gears give you a locked rear end with no differential. Kinda makes it tough to go around corners.

The cheapest way I've seen is to get a used rear axle with a LSD.
