Automatic to manual?

Searched for this, but couldn't find any solid information. Tired of the automatic, would love to have a nice 5 speed instead. I can't sell my car, so im stuck with it for a while. It's also my daily driver, so no heavy modifications are going to be done to it.

I know for starters I'd need a Manual tranny and a manual shifter&console +clutch and pedal, what else? And how much would a shop charge to do this? I don't think i could do it myself, because I don't have a lift :tdown:

If anyone has a guide to this specifically for our cars, that would be awesome.

Hate to say it, sell your car. It's not worth the hassle with all the componets you will need and the cost to do it.

I dont see anything positive out of it anymore except:
1) ~25 - 30 lbs lighter
2) a little less drivetrain loss (little more DD MPG?)
3) more fun? maybe
4) cheaper tranny if it breaks

an issue with you plan is that finding a shop to do it would be difficult and if you do find one, it will be super expensive.

yep, nobody is gonna wanna do that work
I've pulled my tranny at least 4 times without a lift.

I switched my auto for a manual a few days after I bought the car. (I got such a good deal on the car, I couldnt pass it up, even iff it was an auto).

It wasnt that hard. 2 days up on jackstads in the garage. I went to the junkyard and grabbed everything I needed out of a '97 camaro and rewired it all my self.

Its not that hard. The worst part was mounting the master cylinder. Its totally worth it if you want a manual tranny. I did the swap because I prefer driving stick over auto.

If you end up not swapping the tranny, but still want a bit more speed, get a stall converter. It will be faster than if you had a 5-speed in there.

appreciate the help guys. but are you should it would really cost alot? my friend says he knows a guy that can do it for $1200, no idea if that includes parts or not, im hoping so. also have another friend that has had an illegal immigrant(lol) do transmission work for him before, so i might could ask him.

um anyone know a rough list of parts that you MUST have for the conversion? ones i know of are
manual tranny
flywheel
clutch
shifter

Depends on what you're doing with the car. I'm keeping mine n/a and if you look at the timeslips above the fastest n/a cars are manual. I think if more people invested in some g-force gears we would have some faster boosted cars as well.

Too ad to your list:

Master Cylinder & Clutch Line
Clutch Pedal
Slave Cylinder & Release Bearing


You'll probably need the Transmission wiring harness out of a 5spd and probably a PCM out of a 5sp car.

I wouldnt fool with it. You could build your auto cheaper and easier. If he said 1200 thats probably labor only. Or if he said it is complete get ready for him to call you half way through and say I need some more money for parts. If youe dead set on doing it find a wrecked car with a stick and try to work out a deal with the yard to pull everything you need. Tell them you will throw in your automatic stuff if they will cut you a deal.

well looks like my friend's dad can do it, but ill have to wait till summer since it will take him a while since he works, and i need a car right now.

again i appreciate the help guys, and if you have any more parts to add to that list feel free to post it. also, if anyone else has done this conversion, id like to see what the overall price for just parts is. I've heard about $600-800 if you get salvaged parts.
