if you havent done a gear install before i would advise that you take it to a shop to have it done, just so that you get the proper backlash and what not so you dont end up with a howling rearend

howling rear end? Thats best case scenario!!
My gears didnt howl or anything for a whole year (I put them in myself but didnt tighten the pinion nut enough... so after a year they started howling. Next thing you know my Rear end is alllll over the street!!)
It went from bad to worse in about 5 miles.
Backlash is not the only measurement you have to get right.... you also have to make sure pinion depth is set.
You have to get your gears and differential to match on the series number.
      Series 3 probably

what all does that $250 include?
Sounds like the price of new gears alone. Install is gonna be $275 - $350

You can search on sites like these in the for sale sections and ebay, etc.
Also like S-10 truck sites.... dunno if I'd go to car-part.com

Just make sure you are getting everything and in good condition.
When I bought my Zexel Torsen off ebay, they didnt include the thrust block!! So I had to order one off ebay for $25

250 with gears? The way that's worded, it sounds like they're charging you for labor and new gears...if that's the case, that's a f'n bargain

easier? Installing gears doesn't change from brand to brand, so they're gonna charge $250(which is still a good price) regardless of what brand of gears you bring them. So, I guess if GM gears are the cheapest you can find, then go ahead and get those
