    Re: rear end problem

    you could always check the fluid, assuming it IS the rear-end
    otherwise I think it could just be like a pipe or some piece of metal hitting
    another piece of metal and not hurting anything

      check your trans mount it will make a clunk on acceleration when you give it a good bit of gas. Do you have a stick? if so does it move much when you get that clunk. if it's not the trans mount or the fluid level then get the rear end off the ground and see if how much slack is in the rear end. If you have the torsen diff you don't have spider gears per se, sorry but I can't remember if W68 was the v6 performance package or just the appearance package.

      also it could be your U-joints they will also clunk under acceleration if worn

        w68 = appearance
        Did you get the whole rear-end assembly off a Z28 or Trans Am?

          depending on the clunk, it sounds like ur tranny, i forget the SES light code, but mine went on once i cleared it then it stayed off, but the clunking would come back occasionally, had to have a shift kit put in as well as a new spring inside the tranny, better hope its not that, i think it was like a 700 fix.

            ok so i have been drivin around and b4 i drive the car (since it is winter here in ny) i have been lettin it warm up a bit longer than usual and so far it hasnt givin me problems but i still wanna find out what it was cause i dont want it arrising later on. but yea i have no idea where the new rear end came from i jus brought it to the mechanic when the old stock one crapped out but it is only doin one wheel peels so ik it has an open diff.

              Re: rear end problem

              if you take off the rear-end cover and take a pic we can identify the differential and whether its a posi or not

              warming up the car first before driving... will still leave the rear-end fluid cold (cause the rear-end isnt doing anything when you're just parked and running)
              If the problem doesnt occur anymore (because you're letting the car warm up first) then I wouldnt think its the rear-end

              Did you get a fulll rear-end to take to the mechanic? OR
              Did you just bring the gears and other parts to him?

                you might want to check the universal joints they will pop sometimes when they need replacing.

                    Re: rear end problem

                    slow6's point is still valid...if you let the car sit and idle for a bit, then it's not coming from the rear axle.
                    After all, letting the car sit and run for a bit isn't really "warming it up" because the rear fluid stays cold, and if it's a manual, so does the tranny fluid. The best way to warm up your car is to drive gingerly for the first few miles
