I have a 2000 firebird with 3.08s. I was thinking of putting in new gears like 3.73s. but don't new gears mess up your speedometer. I've been searching but i cant seem to get a straight answer. also if i put these gears in, how much would it hurt my MPG. I do drive on the highway sometimes.
thanks
P.S. How do you guys get your signature with you car mods and pics of your car on here? I'm tired of having to type what kind of car I have and my mods all the time.

Since speed calcuations are made by the computer with assumed ratios, changing the ratio without updating the computer will result in an inaccurate speed reading

If your driving habits stay the same, you should note an increase in City MPG with a proportional decrease in Highway MPG...therefore, how much it'll hurt your MPG is more dependant on how often you drive in the city versus how often you drive on the highway. In other words, if you do mostly city driving with sparse highway driving, you'll experience an increase in MPG

you never said whether your car is auto or manual
it does make a difference
If I were you I'd get the 3.73s if manual
otherwise I would just get a z28/TransAm rear-end and not the gears, just the whole rear-end from a junkyard....that is the cheapest way
Sorry i have an auto. a transam rear end. sounds good maybe i'll look into that. Will a transam rear end fit i my car or would i have to cut and move stuff?
Allright just looked at the code on the drivers side door and i don't have 3.08s. the code is ethier a gu5 or gu6(3.23s or 3.42s) .. its really faded . Is there another code or way i can see if i have gu5 or gu6.
