well after having swapped out my entire rear end due to some funky clunking sounds on decelleration the newer rear end is starting to get a little noisy. it was swapped with a lower mileage rear end, but it seems these rear ends dont hold up to that many miles (maybe its just me???) and begin to sound like an old jeep, so it was explained to me by an elder.
now when i installed this newer rear end i used a new gasket and fresh lucas gear oil. fluid level is just fine but still it whines, especially at higher speeds, 60mph+. when questioning a fairly knowledgeable friend i was told the cross pins that retain the spider gears wear out after high mileage.
now heres the question, will the guts (gears, spiders, cross pins, basically the center chunk) from a 3rd gen axle work? i am aware that there are 2 and 3 series carriers based on the gear ratio and i dont necessarily want to change the ratio, i like my speedo being accurate, but i would like to not have to worry about this problem. im also aware that the widths of the rear ends are different, 3rd gens being narrower.
reason im asking is i can get a 3rd gen rear end assy farily cheap if not free.
i searched the drivetrain section and didnt see any of this info and its possible it may come in use to others as well.
"new" rear end was at 78K miles for sure, old rear end was approaching 165K. also this 3rd gen rear has disc brakes... are they usable on my application?
any info would be greatly appreciated.
