  • Changing out Gears

    1997 Camaro 3.8
    5 speed
    Dual Flowmaster 80series
    K&N
    High Flow Converter

I have read a little about chaning my gear ratio. Seems like it would help out my acceleration quite a bit?

    Questions:

Would 3:73's be best for mostly city driving with some highway driving on the weekends? Any problems it might cause with the car? Will my speedo be way off or what? Best place to get them? Can I get something to make both wheels spin instead of one? Where do you reccomend I buy them. How much is a decent shop going to charge to do it?

    Re: Changing out Gears

different ratio gears WILL make your speedo incorrect yes.

to make both wheels spin insted of just one you need a lsd (or a locker) and lsd came stock on all v8's if im correct, and as an option on our v6's.

your probally better off having a shop install them, so they dont whine.

another option is getting a whole rear-end out of another car, then just swapping your's for the new one. being a 97, you might not have disk brakes in the rear, so it would be a brake upgrade as well.

swapping out the whole rear-end will be around the same difficultness as just changing the gears and adding an lsd ( limited slip diffiental )

      not really
swapping out rear-ends is straight forward

putting in gears and a lsd/posi is sooo technical and yes, I would say it takes longer
It requires you to have the tools and a gear install kit as well as the knowledge of how to do it

        well geez slow6.

yes you can correct your speedo with a tuner. but im assuming he knew that, just putting in the gears and driving off his speedo will be off.

yes a rear swap would be easyer. the way his post sounded, he's better off yanking a rear end from another car. swapping rear gear's isnt alot shorter time wise, becuase it has to be done 100% correctly.

and yes, 3.73's will be fine for city driving and some highway driving. 4.10's would be ok too, but your highway milage would suffer noticably ( around 2500+rpms at 65 i think )
