I know alot of you guys have this problem on your t5 so ive heard...Everytime i put my car into reverse it grinds unless i put it in another gear before reverse and then when im backing up it likes to pop right out of reverse....well my question is what is causeing it to do this and how can i fix it or about how much will a shop charge me?

synchro's on it's way out, rebuild's the only way to fix it. expect at least 300 for labor

Reverse does not have a synchro. My experience in the past tells me that your throw out bearing is the cause. A new clutch and throw out bearing will solve your problem. In the meantime hit second gear before reverse so you don't grind it and risk damaging the gears.

As for the popping out of reverse, there must be an internal problem with the tranny, or your shifter might be out of adjustrment. Is it an aftermarket shifter?

Now this makes sense. Mine grinds going into reverse as well if I don't hit another gear first, and I know for a fact my throw out bearing is going out.

usaully when tranny's start poping out of gears its becuase its on its way out.

            how many miles?

grinding into reverse is normal, it isnt snycro'd like others said. just go into another gear first.

So this is normal and not a sign of the bearing going out? When I bought the car, they told me the reverse grinding is because it isn't synced. My bearing is going out anyway, but was wondering if I should go back and give the place I bought it dirty looks. They gave me a 30 day guarantee when I bought it to fix anything that was wrong. I'm sure they still have a record that I brought it in from the grinding.

grinding is normal yes, just put the shifter into 5th and then go into reverse and it wont grind.

poping out of gear is NOT normal, blldogg gave you a list of what could be the cause one post up.

LOL... I've heard almost every gear here but the one I use. I always hit first before going into reverse. I guess they all work.

Why would GM make this grinding normal? Sounds to me like they should have addressed this issue.

i personally like 5th becuase its directly up from reverse.

it grinds becuase its not syncronized, why reverse isnt syncro i do not know. ive heard people complain of brand new cars with the t-5 still grind going into reverse, so even new t-5's still dont have a syncronized reverse.

There is a reason why there are no syncros. I was told in my class. I do not remember why though

                              Re: Grinding in reverse?

I believe there's no synchro in reverse to avoid people accidently going into "6th" while shifting out of 5th driving... If you had a synchro, it'd go right into reverse and well many people who have an LT1/LS1 f-body may jump into a v6 thinking they have 6 gears to play with, throw it from 5th to reverse and break their drivetrain. Just a thought, because lastr I checked the T56's 6th gear is where reverse is on a V6 Fbody's T5.

It's pretty hard to get it into reverse while driving forward...

I'm kinda buzzed right now so if I just said something entirely wrong, blame the alcohol not me! :)
