What is up with my car?

Alright, so I've noticed lately that when I put it in neutral and let off the clutch, like when parking or whatever, I hear a clunk. Sometimes the car just doesnt want to go into 2nd gear and I just have to slam it. What the hell? Now, I'm hearing some kind of rattaling/vibration sound coming from the shifter area. Cant tell if its something broke in the converter(a new catco) or what? I've cheked the clutch fluid and its fine.

Also, whenever I go to stop my gas gauge goes WAY down. And if I put like 5 gallons in an empty take it registers half a tank. Then once I stop it goes back up. What is going on?

First of all, it sounds like you are about to need a new clutch if it is becoming hard to put it into a certain gear, possibly a new tranny. As for the gas tank fluctuation that is from your tank float. I'm pretty sure all of our cars do that, but if you think it is different than most, then I would just install a new float sensor in your tank which = lots of fun.

I guess I can live with the tank float. If the tank is full or almost full it doesnt do it.

Car is a 1997 with 100,000 miles on it now. But I hope to god the tranny isnt going out. I thought that was a bigger problem with automatics. How can I tell whether its the clutch or tranny?

First off, you can check the fluid level in the tranny and make sure that it isn't low. And if it is, fill accordingly. Secondly, you said it only doers it in one gear (2nd) and makes a clunk whenever you have it in neutral.k

As you are driving your car down the road do you hear any type of whining noise while going higher in rpm's?

Okay, I will have to get it checked then. If its low or whatever what exactly does that mean? And if its not? Sometimes its hard to put into first too. But its only hard to put into gear sometimes. Also, I hear no noise coming from the transmission area. Except for some sort of vibration/rattle which I think is coming from my converter.
