  • FYI: 1 pc steel Driveshaft Vs. 1 pc alum

I bought an aluminum driveshaft and while I had both of them, I weighed them to see exaclty how much each weighed. There has been a discussion or two about it, but here it is. They are both 1 piece DS's by the way.

Me (fully clothed with shoes), no driveshaft: 201.0 lbs

    Me + 1 pc Steel DS: 220.0 lbs - Me = 19.0 lbs

(its kinda blurry, but it was hard to hold the camera steady with the DS in my ohter hand)

    Me + Aluminum DS: 212.5 lbs - Me = 11.5 lbs

Conclusion: the aluminum is 7.5 lbs lighter than the 1 pc steel one.
I weighed everything (even myself) 3 times each.

Just FYI for anyone who didnt know or was curious to know.

Note* The stock 2 pc steel DS is about 33 lbs. I was comparing a 1 pc steel to a 1 pc aluminum.

I got 5 mph more out of every gear switching from a 2 piece steel to aluminum.

I could tell a slight difference in the aluminum shaft when I instaleld it.

They are both OEM/factory driveshafts off of V8's not a V6's.

I am not sure on the diameter, I havent shipped the steel one back yet, I can measure it if you'd like. If I get some extra time I'll measure the diameter of the alum one, but that means jacking the car up again. I'll do it when I have time. :)

ok, don't worry about it. i'm pretty sure the aluminum is 3" and the steel is 2.5".

That sounds about right cuz the alum didnt fit in as easily as the steel. It took a lil more finesse.
