  • transmission removal problem

I'm replacing the clutch in my 2000 Camaro and I have run into a problem.
With everything disconnected I unbolted the trans and got it to break free
of the locator pins. I begain to slide her back and she hit the tunnel so I tilt
the engine back till it stops. I get the trans out to the point that the input
shaft catches on the diaphram fingers of the pressure plate! I use a pry bar to move the fingers away and out comes the trans.
My problem is the engine will not tilt back any further because at the back of the intake there is a nipple with the vacuum hose that goes the the brake booster. When I go to re-install the trans I don't want to bend the fingers on my new Centerforce DF clutch.
Can I hammer the transmission tunnel for the needed clearance? Or is there something I'm over looking?

just pull the upper intake plenum....that should get you enough room to tilt it back farther....i just pulled both engine and trans from a 94 and this helps a lot with clearance issues

you are making this hard and dangerous. DONT HAMMER ON YOU CAR!!! there are 4 bolts on the trans that connect it to the bellhousing. take them off, then take off the bell housing. dont jack up your motor you can lift the car and make it fall or damasge pulleys.
cant wait till my lt1 and nitrous.

iv'e changed my trans/clutch 3 times and done it every time with the bell housing and trans bolted together just put the trans up in there at an extreme angle and then tilt the back up the imput will touch the fingers just a bit but with 2 people ( 2 careful people :slap: ) they barely touch and wont hurt anything. The fingers should flatten out a bit when you tighten the pressure plate anyhow, let us know how it goes.

it is 100 times easier to just pull the 4 bolts. then u dont have to have a million extensions to tighten the bell ousing. and 1 person can easily do it with no damage to the pressure plate. all you have to do is accidently bend one finger and your screwed.trust me its easier.

:twak: ok well sounds easy, but it's not gonna be so easy to tear that all back out and put the slave cyl back in cause you cant take the bellhousing off without removing it, and you cant remove it with it in the car. so let me know how that works out for you! (this aplies to the cars with the internal slave cyl)

You have to keep thebellhousing attached withthe 3.8L.

I just tilt the motor. I had no severe problems with it coming out. And I woudl not hammer it, just get a crowbar/prybar, and jut pry the bellhousing apart.

then to get it back in, , its just a matter of lining it up right. I cheated, I tied a rope from the tail of the tranny up t the t-top bar, to help give me leverage and not put all hte weight of it on my chest.

you sor of have to tilt the motor slide it up, tilt the motor less then slide it in. Its a little crazy. and make sure the tranny is in "neutral"

I have a 2k, and did it twice without major problems.

PS I would replace your slave cylinder if you are doing a clutch.
