  • Shifting while racing

I was wondering this the other day....

During normal driving, my shift routine goes like this:

    Foot off gas
    Clutch pedal in (disengage clutch)
    Shift to next gear
    Clutch pedal out (engage clutch)
    Foot back on gas

I was thinking to both shorten the shift time, and bring the engine's revs up during the shift, I could put my foot on the gas a bit sooner, before the clutch is completely let out. This would only be done during racing at the track. Besides the clutch, would this hurt anything else in the drivetrain?

Well this brings up a ton controversy on all the v8 forums the infamous question:
Which is faster speed shifting or power shifting? To answere your question I believe when you doing anything fast with a car its gunna have some added wear and tear. as far as shifting goes you can do the
    Foot off gas
    Clutch pedal in (disengage clutch)
    Shift to next gear
    Clutch pedal out (engage clutch)
    Foot back on gas

In a split second with practice if your good or practice some and you won't have to worry about the rpms.
Or you could do the powershifting which is debatably faster b/c it forces the rpms up while shifting
ex) mash down on gas with all your might
hold the gas pedal to the floor
clutch in, shift gears, clutch out.<-- all in about a half of second while not hitting the rev limiter

Its your choice really but there is no room for error with the second if you do it wrong its your tranny or a bent pushrod or whatever the case you'll be crying on the way home.

I thought powershifting was shifting without the clutch?

Um...no. Double clutching takes more time. You have to disengage the clutch, put the car into neutral and let the clutch engage again, then disengage it and shift to the next gear before engaging the clutch. This adds an extra step into the "normal" shift process.

I powershift somewhat, while quick shifting. I'll bring the RPM's up and you'll learn when the car will want to pop out of gear. Pop it out, then really quick slam on the clutch, throw it into the next gear and drop the clutch. Once it pops out of gear, go ahead and push it into the next gear. When you slam on the clutch, once it hits the floor, step off it. Abit of practice and you'll get your shifts down to milliseconds :D. When racing I NEVER take my foot off the gas until I've reached the finish :D

Ohhh and the guy who powershifts without using the clutch, for the record your my hero.

BTW I was half watching the movie when i heard this and then i turned it off. Their driving hondas, not 18 speed unsynchronized big rigs. Last I checked hondas aren't using strait cut gears and dog ringed transmissions.

Scary thing is, my clutch works just perfect :D. No slipping at all, and it's the stock clutch with 87K on it :D
