And here is the gear that mounts to the ring gear. Its all chewed up. I think this is from the donut on back tire thing from many moons ago.

the gear that mounts to the ring gear is your ABS ring...

looks like you'll need, at the least, a new ring/pinion and a new ABS ring. Looks like your bearings and carrier may have survived. Simplest fix is to do a rear swap.

          Re: Rear differential is clunking

That's rough man. That ABS ring is seriously torn up. Either way, running the spare tire on the rear should never cause that kind of thing to happen.

Now, if you had a 4 wheel drive vehicle, and you're running a smaller spare tire on one end of the truck, and you're driving it in 4 wheel drive, that will break something. It's making the two ends run (hooked together) the same speed with different ratios, without seperating. Something is bound to break.

On your car, it wouldn't have mattered since the diff allows both sides to spin at different speeds. When you go around a curve the inside tire and outside tire are spinning at different RPMs, so a spare shouldn't matter either. GM reccomends something like 50 miles max at 55mph.....I think.

Now, enough of that. I have a GM 3.42 gear set and an ABS ring on a dead Zexel Torsen, and 2 good axles in a bent housing. If your local purchase falls through, I might be able to help ya out some. They're all for sale over here: http://forum.camarov6.com/showthread.php?t=78195

Not that I'm trying to make a sale here, I dunno what will work in your car.... just an offer if you need.
