  • 4.10 gears breaking in

So the shop ppl said that you have to break the gears in like you do a new engine. No dropping the clutch, hardshifting, etc for the 1st 500 miles, then you're good to go. So why exactly do you have to break the gears in (also had a limited slip put in)?

I'm a litle fuzzy on the fact that I have to take off and baby it, yet i can "drive 85-90 on the highway."

when you shift really hard it puts more stress on moving parts as to if you were just driving normally. When you go easy on the clutch the power eases into gear, if you just drop the clutch you trans, clutch, driveshaft, and gears take on the load all at once.

Oh ok, I think i got it. Thanks for that. Another question though, this time about my speedo. Yea, i konw it's off. So can i just take it to the regualr mechanic and get him to fix it (it's a 97 w/ analog speedometer)? Or will they charge me like $80 for a 10 second job? Next thing for the car is a HPtuner, but not for a few more months.

Brand new gears come from the factory with small spines on the teeth. As you drive on them the spines wear down, but if you were to push it too hard then the gears will slip and you'll ruin your rear end. Or at least thats what they told me when i had my gears put in. Course i had used (read: broken in) Richmond gears so i didn't have to worry about it.

What # were they/how much of a difference did you notice? if any.

Man...it's sooo hard to not dog it right now. But the urge has left a little bit (not much) knowing that I might ruin the gears if I do.

if i were you, id say **** it. And fill ur tank up and just drive around all day and then that 500 miles will go pretty quick. So then u can really mash the gas.

In reality breaking in gears is a wives tale. There is no breakin period for gears. If they are installed correctly and have fresh oil you can romp on it as soon as you leave the shop. I have never seen a ring and pinion fail from lack of "break in time" out of dozens of cases. The worst i have ever seen is gear whine. I have richmand gears 3:73 and I drive my car like i stole it. I now have 12K miles on my gears with very hard driving stright from the shop and they work great. Ask someone that builds/works on drag racing cars professinaly and they will tell you the same thing i just did. A wives tale.

                        Re: 4.10 gears breaking in

I put 4.10's in mine and I'm at i'm at 2500 rpm's when doing around 65mph in 5th. But I also have BIG rear tires, as in tall (275/60/16. 28 inches in diameter. I think the stockers are like 25.). So that kinda made it like I had like a 3.08 gear. You'll have to shift more around town, but it's much more fun to drive. So i'd say 4.10. But your best bet is probably 3.73's.

Btw, leaving TWO black marks behind you instead of one is a marvelous feeling.

actually you do need to sorta break in gears but you don't have to it is best to drive the vehicle long enough to let the oil in the rear-end heat up then let it cool completely it gives everything to expand and contract once hence your break in
