Just got new gears installed. At first, they seemed alright, but on my way home today, I started hearing a loud, annoying whining coming from the rear. BUT! It only happens in 5th gear. I was on the highway cruising around at 80ish, and it was loud and annoying, but I could drop it down into 4th, and the sound would disappear. Since it's only in one gear, I think it's my tranny, but I'm not too sure. The rear end was just rebuilt with all new fluid, additive, and bearings, but the tranny hasn't seen any care in abit. The car was sitting for almost a week with it's rear in the air while I was working on the gear swap, so I dunno if that had anything to do with it or not. Any suggestions? I'm about to go ask my mechanic who installed the gears about it, and maybe take him for a short ride.

Gear whine is known to only happen at certain speeds but not what gear you transmission is in. I'm really thinking it's your 5th gear in your tranny and not the new rear end gears.

there is usually whine when gears are installed and once broken in it will go away....

and whines usually happen when you are cruising at a speed.

How many miles does it take to break them in?!? They've only been on for like 200 miles.
