Should i try an Additive?!!?

Ok well on my 3.4 firebird A4 with 130,000 miles. My transmisiion is doing some weird things sometimes if some of you might already know.

My transmission when it is not warmed up operates rough, longer shifts, harder shifts(mostly just from 1st to 2nd gear)

When i had my fluid changed 10k miles ago, my tranny had never completely overcame its promblems, but the fluid is the right level and still a nice pink.

I also had my tranny looked at and pan taken off by a shop, they found metal shells at the bottom of my pan, not to good...


Would u guys reccomend that i try a "Good" transmission additive like Lucas or Slick 50:High Mileage, or even a B&M Trick shift additive?

Can i please hear some of your oppionions. I know that alot of you smart people have some input that u can give me on my automatic. And im kinda in a bind for money so a rebuild isnt an option at this point. But besides the things i mentioned, my tranny is in fair condition.

ummm my input might help..i used royal purple in my tranny and i got no problems lol it has 180000 miles on it, i did that at 148000, when i got the car

so you think i should go ahead and switch out my tranny fluid from the stock Dexron III to that good Royal Purple that i hear so much about?

I guess that would be the smartest idea, but that would be alittle more expensive then i wanted to spend.

Do you really think just changing the fluid to Royal Purple would help solve my hard shifting issue? And roughness?

It is normal that when the engine/tranny is cold, the PCM intentionally moves the shift points to a higher setting and the shifting can be a bit more harsh.

I really only have 2 ideas,

1) Get TAP (Transmission Adaptive Pressure) reset (done with a scan tool) and go through the re-learn procedure.

2) Possible TFT (Transmission Fluid Temperature) sensor problem. Have it checked. At low temps the sensor resistance is supposed to be high and the resistance reduces as temperature increases. (-40degF = 100707 ohms to 302degF=47.2 ohms

But ultimately, if you have chunks of metal in the pan, you got something not good going on in there, and the slightest bit of debris can fowl sensors, valves and regulators.

Yea, its unfortunate, but i wasnt financially ready for my rebuild either...

but my opinion would be to either save up for a rebuild, or possibly find a decent low mileage used one.

Heck, or sell the whole car and pick up a lower mileage one :D

yea it would be kinda hard to sell my car when the car shifts noticeably hard when the person goes to try and drive it.

yea the odd thing is, is that it ONLY shifts hard from a range of 2200 -2700 rpms', if i give it alittle more gas it never shifts hard and doesnt shift hard any other gear also.(only from 1st to 2nd)

So i dont no enough about trannys to no what that means.

I also just checked my tranny fluid once my car was really really hot and warmed up from a long drive. The pink fluid was about 1 cm above full, and i had the car running and shifted through all of the gears back and fourth, so mabey i have to much pressure buildup with the fluid after those jiffy ****ers changed my tranny fluid.

Should i try and take some out? How do u do that anyway.

You should also check your cable on the TB to tranny. If it is cable and not DBW. Not really sure if our cars have this, but I had this exact same problem on a 3rd gen, and the cable was stretched. Check mounts too.

Also, did you or they ever change the filter? I know most places just pump the fluid out, not bothering to take off the pan to change filters.

If all else fails, before you junk the tranny. Try a bottle of brake fluid. Strange, I know but I have seen it bring a tranny back to life more than once. But really, there was metal in the pan... Good luck.

I just called jiffy lube and they said they would check out my fluid level, do u think having my fluid level alittle high,(and the fluid looked alittle bubbly to from being a high level i belive)

so im gunna bring my car there today when there not busy and fix the fluid level for free. Ill tell you how the car performs after that.
