So this is probably stupid but I don't know. What is the "shield" that runs down the side of my driveshaft? I searched this and didn't come up with any thing. It bolts to the end of my transmission and to the differential. Is it needed or dead weight? Also in searching I came across the term "tunnel brace". Where is this located and this serves as a cheap d/s loop, correct? Thanks

Re: what is this?
correct, they stock one will do just fine. The torque arm keeps your axel from coming forward during hard acceleration, but if you dont have that much power, there is no need for an upgrade.

and if the axle rotates around its axis, would it not be going foward?Last edited by Meatyshells; 07-16-2007, 01:29 AM.

Re: what is this?
Like the name says, the torque arm transmits the torque force from the rear end assembly (differential/axles/axle tubes) to the front half of the car (specifically, to the tailshaft of the tranny). This allows the engineers to design the rear half of the car to have less structure and components and thus less weight (and less manufacturing costs).
and if the axle rotates around its axis, would it not be going foward
The torque causes the axle tubes/differential housing to pivot at the LCA attach points. The torque arm restricts this "pivoting" movement. Now Playing: \'99 Pewter Firebird, stock, bone stock, and nothing but stock, so help me God!
Comming attractions: K&N Filter, Lid Mod, Intake Bellows Smooth Pipe Mod.
I dream about: Forced Induction (TC or SC) or NOX (or both!)
