When I put my car in reverse and go faster than say 8 mph i hear a griding sound from where the tranny would be, but when I put it in drive I no longer hear it. However I do NOT hear the sound and very slow reverse speeds... any ideas anyone?

Re: My A4 grinding in reverse but not in drive...
are u sure the tranny is grinding from being put into reverse, or it starts to make a grinding sound where the tranny is when the car is in reverse.
Mabey when ur car is in reverse, it is driving rough enough to make something like the torque converter cover rattle, or exhaust rattle or mabey your flexplate might be loose/broken/cracked.
I have the same problem, but mine does it when im at a stop light in drive, reverse, and sometime i can hear the rattle(sound like rocks jumping around in pan) in nuetral or in park.
I have a feeling its either my torque converter/flexplate cover rattling from rough engine idle.

Originally posted by newage1928well if it is the cover why would it only rattle in reverse and not in any other gear. I gun it in drive and i don't hear it at all.
Well same thing hear. I dont hear it at all when i give it gas, i just hear the exhaust and take off, I usually hear it only when it feels like making the noise and acting up. It sometimes will be really loud and other times not so loud.
I have heard this noise once before and got my car onto a lift and "adjusted" this cover and i never heards it agian untill it came back amonth ago. I gotta get under the car again. ahhhhhh

yea i dont remember what it was, we just "messed" with the metal shields that cover up all that junk under there, my rattle noise is gettign really bad on my car to, when my car is warmed up it rattles the whole time the car isnt moving, and then once i start moving fast enough i cant hear it anymore.

Re: My A4 grinding in reverse but not in drive...
what the hell is the torque converter cover?
do you mean the bellhousing? cause that is pretty much the only thing that surrounds the verter.
from the driveshift up it goes..
driveshaft
trans
verter
flexplate
inspection plate
and if your trans is only making a sound in reverse then there is something wrong with your reverse gear. but if it only happens at 8+mph i dont think you really have a problem

if your talking to me, i think i meant the torque converter, its whatever has a rounded cover and is connected to the tranny. Thats what I THINK is rattling on my car. It almost sounds like a broken flexplate, but not nearly as bad, the sound/rattle comes and goes but for me is mostly there at idle in most gears, (rattles only when engine is warmed up) and when i am slightly accellerating.

Re: My A4 grinding in reverse but not in drive...
the round thing is the torque converter, it is bolted to the flexplate, the flexplate is bolted to the crank.
if your flexplate was cracked or broken you would know it, trust me. the problem is either your verter or the trans which are both pretty expensive.
but mayb you are lucky and it is just your verter, cause that would be a lot cheaperLast edited by Meatyshells; 07-29-2007, 09:31 PM.

Re: My A4 grinding in reverse but not in drive...
why would you be going up a steep hill backwards?
your car isnt made to go in reverse which is why i said it's not that bif of a deal (for me i guess) i only use reverse to back out of my driveway and parking spots. and i dont think i have ever gone over 5mph in reverse

Re: My A4 grinding in reverse but not in drive...
i dont think that would be the problem, most likely it is something wrong with the reverse gear syncro in your transmission
