  • Rear Differential Leak

I went and got my oil changed the other week, and on the bottom of the receipt it says, BE ADVISED REAR DIFFERENTIAL LEAK PRIOR TO SERVICE! What is this and how serious is it? I don't see any leakage drops under where I park my car, and I'm wondering what I should do here.

    Thanks

    Re: Rear Differential Leak

I would just take and drain the fluid and put a new seal on and fill it back up. Won't cost you more than $25. this is with 2 quarts of 75-90 royal purple fluid and a $5 gasket.

Ensure that you use (2) gaskets, and torque to spec. GM sells them (2) to a package. One gasket will leak.

It's possible it's not the rear cover like they're saying. Also check your pinion seal. Those are 2X more likely to leak than your rear cover.

I agree with 98 3.8. Pinion seal is a much more common leak.

Figure out where the diff is leaking from before you start throwing money at it.

Man, I've never had a problem with a single gasket leaking, on my third change now (I try to do it every couple years due to the road racing).

I use the basic Felpro that Checkers carries, cheap harbor freight torque wrench. Just careful to make sure the surfaces are nice and clean before I reinstall.

i've never had one gasket leak either. But i've started putting a tiny bead of rtv all round just to be safe.
