  • how hard to swap axles?

So I read the write up and it seems easy enough, actually, too easy. Has anyone swapped there axles out? Is it as easy as it seems? The Differential stays in correct? Is this a one person job?

    TIA

Are you just swapping the axle shafts or the entire rear axle?

If just the shafts, it's very easy and the diff stays put. One person just for sure.

Be VERY careful what axle shafts you get. 93-97 are NOT the same as 98+. GM lists different P/N for the axle shafts. Some aftermarket do not fit. Moser axle shafts DO NOT fit a 93-97 rear. They say they will fit 93-02 but they do not. They are too short. I know, I had them - they fit a 98+ only.

Unfortunately, I found out about the difference AFTER I got and tried to install the Moser axle shafts. The difference is only maybe 1/8" - 1/4". It was easy to see when the two shafts were side by side.

I later found on the V8 sites, 98+ owners reported that the 93-97 shafts were too LONG, and created problems with the rear brakes.

Your probably shaking your head but whats the diffrence? These are long rods with grooves on end for gear wheels and flare out on other end where stud bolts go through.

Thanks, I did not know that.

He says "I have two nice stock axles out of a 3 channel 10 bolt 93-02 F body rear. They already have 3" ARP wheel studs installed."

I just asked if there out of his car which is a 2000 so they probably won't work for me. O well better to find out now then later

The "axle" or rear axle is the entire axle assembly including pumpkin, gears, the housing for the shafts, wheel bearings and shafts.

The axle shafts are what you described.

          Why are you changing them?

Ok, lol, I'm changing the whole axle with one from a z28, but I want to change the axle shafts cause they are rough looking. I've been sanding the rest down but would rather just swap the axles out for "new" ones if I can that are in way better shape, with 3" ARP studs already installed. Heres the axle I've been working on. It was all looking like cover when I first got it

:omg: you are grinding down the whole thing? I took a wire brush to my 'new' one and painted it.

I am in a similar situation. I need to swap one of the shafts in my 'new' axle for one from my car because it's a little worn. I have vacation time coming up, so hopefully I can do the full axle swap then.

Yea, I already went and got a can of rustoleum black paint.

I had a 60grit pad sanding it down and then I upped it to a 36grit pad. I'm done with that part now and have 3 diffrent wire brushs for the less open areas.

The guy sold the axles and basicly said they were all the same so he didn't know. He said the only diffrence was 3 channel and 4 channel same length and what not.

I trust Firebird GT on this one and let them go to someone else. Hopefully they work for them. I have enough things to do then worry about something not fitting.

LOL, I just paid a whole whopping 800 bucks for them to sand and re-paint it also. Its a good 5 foot paint job.
