It was making a strange whining noise (i know, sounds like gears) kind of like someone playing an eletric guitar. It would make the noise semi-randomly. No specific road, no specific warmup time. The only thing consistent is that the faster I go, the louder the whine gets (if it's already whining) and it only occurs at highway speeds. Then it'll go away, then come back... I got new gears (and LSD) installed a little while ago, and I'm still having the same noise. Since i got new gears installed, I don't think it's the gears making the noise. But, maybe...i dunno, that's why i'm posting.....
I have a loud whine in my rear also. I had it looked at by a friend. He put the car up on jacks, turned the wheels to make sure it wasn't a wheel bearing. It didn't make any noise, so he got under and found the differential has a very small leak at the pinion. So now he is looking at if he can do the work, without having to take the pinion out. But from what I am reading, you can remove the bearing without taking the pinion out... not too sure though. So anyways.... he's thinking pinion bearing and seal.
check the fluid in the differential. maybe the fluid is moving around and not making it to the gear set at certain times, like turning or hills? If the fluid is low my guess is that the gears aren't seeing fluid all the time. maybe there's a leak in the diff

My guess would be pinion bearing. I didn't realise how loud mine had gotten until I had it fixed and the car was silent again, as much as an f-body can be.
when you put the yolk back in did you torque it to the right specs. you might have it too tight which is pulling the gears and not allowing enough fluid to travel. you might try loosening it up a little.
