This fits along a few recent posts but my diff has broken gears. went to aamco trans to get checked they said 1300 for all new parts. I am thinking I will just change out the rear end. I might as well do a lsd/posi rear end. my options are a y87package or an ss, say 01 comes with and lsd rear end right? would any 93-2002 rear end work, v6 or v8?

    Re: rear end

what I really saying is, I want a limited slip diff and maybe better gears. what camaro do I need to tell them what I need it out of. I know the y87 code. but salvage yards do not always have the car with it

      Re: rear end

just ask them if they have a differential from a V8 camaro or firebird. that covers the LSD, then find out what ratio it is so you don't get a 2.73 ratio. search around to see if anything is needed to upgrade to a disc setup from the 98-02. Many people have done it.

        Re: rear end

depending on the year and car the rear ends will be different. For my 97 I found a 97 SS rear so it was a direct swap. However with the ls1 rears you have to watch if it has traction control along with where the sensors are located, the v6s have the abs sensor on the top of the pumpkin whereas most ls1 rears will have two sensors, one located at each axle end. So you have to see if it is a four channel or 3 channel abs setup and such.

So it could be a direct swap or it could take some changing to make it work with your car. Judging from your name and sig you are doing this to a 97 so try and find a low mile lt1 rear if possible for less headaches

Also the 98+ have diffrent brake lines. I broke my pinion and bought a 99 v6 rearend and it is now no good to me. You could modify brake lines to work but I didn't want to do that. Do you have disc brakes now? All LSD rearend will have disc brakes so you can swap your drums on there or do a brake swap also.

Do not pay to get your rear fixed....

go buy a used rear, v6 or v8...

best gears you will get will be 3.42s, unless they put something different in it.

Also all 4th gen v8 rears will work and have lsd. Brakes, most of them are plug and play, there are some differnences, but even if there are, you can swap your current brakes over to most any rear out 4th gen rear out there....

I got a rear with full rear suspension 3.42s, zexel and rear brakes for $250, I have gotten rears without brakes for $150ish before as well.

it would be stupid and makes no sense to swap out the disc brakes for old v6 drum brakes...

The abs is what can be different, you don't need to go to drums and I would not recommend swapping drums over instead of using the disc brakes

thing is... If you have a 93-97 with drums and get a 98+ rear, I think you need to do something with the brake lines as well... and even if you did get those brakes, then you would need to do a front disc swap as well to 98+

                  Re: rear end

front brakes on 93-97 cars was disc from the factory. Y87 cars came with disc in the rears, non-y87 came with drum.

My rear end from an lt1 had discs and it was a direct swap into my car, used the lines from the lt1 rear and they connected right up.

People do the front disc brake swap to get the bigger calipers and rotors, that would be a reason to do a swap...but then if you were really worried about braking then go with the c5 brake upgrade on the front

98+ brakes are bigger then 93-97....

I guess you could get by with it, but you would have proportionally smaller front brakes and bigger rear brakes which would be wierd.

the better way would be upgrade to 98+ and have a balanced brake system. Which are completely better then 93-97s...

If I was buying a used rear I would feel better with a newer one then an older LT1 one. Hence why you would go with an ls1 one. but say you don'twant to upgrade your front brakes as well(money costs), that is why you would swap your brakes over.

                      Re: rear end

If it helps man, I've got a set of 3.42s settin out that I've been trying to sell. It's just the ring gear and pinion gear. If all you really need are gears, I can sell em to you. Problem is, you prolly don't have 3.42s so your computer will need a tune as well with the change.

To be honest, unless you're really gonna put some time and effort into it, just go with stock. Paying Aamco to do the swap would be a waste of time. In this case, I think the dealer would be cheaper.... unless you actually need a new carrier too

I never recommended either one. I was just giving options. I'm in the process of swapping my rear end and wanted to use the "new" disc and not swap the drums but it does take more money and more issues. Just giving him all the info I could.

Very true, another reason I'm swapping in a new rear end.

                            Re: rear end

I know this is from a while back but I been busy. got married and am about to move... but I got a rear end from a 97 z28. the abs sensor was in a different spot and had discs and I had drums. so I just swapped the gears and am waiting until i can afford the discs to put the rest on. so I don't have abs right now. but... both wheels burn out now:)
