OK so I am thinking about swapping out my trans in my 96. The question I have is how high of the ground do I need to get the car in order to get the trans out? Will a normal set of ramps be enough? If not does anyone have any suggestions?

I would say enough room to clear the bellhousing and then a little so 2 feet.

Yes I have a jack. I was just woundering about the stability of putting the entire car up on jack stands, and then climbing under it and wrenching around on it. I am just trying to be safe here and not have a 3200+ lbs car fall on me and my helper... I have never been a big fan of jack stands, I prefer ramps but I have to do what I have to do I guess. thanks for the reply.
On a side note Meaty, how much was the total cost of your conversion to th m5? where sis you get your parts? thanks

you will have no problems with the car on jack stands if jacked up right.
it cost me about 1500 with all new parts couple used. some were also upgraded parts like a short throw shifter.
for the smaller parts i got them from gmpartsdirect.com

Jack stands are extremely safe, obviously set in right spots etc.. If you want to make extra sure put it up on the stands. THen push the car (while not under it of course).. you should not be able to knock it down.
With just ramps I can just make it under the car to change the tranny fluid..
