I want to know something, when upgrading the differential, from a non-LSD 3.08 (series 2) to a LSD 3.42 (series 3), is it a MUST to change the differential cover or is it possible to use the stock cover???

Other thing I wanted to ask.

in my case, upgrading the differential, from a non-LSD 3.08 (series 2) to a LSD 3.42 (series 3), is it necessary to use the ABS Reluctor Ring that SLP sells and in which part of the differential setup the reluctor ring goes???

no, you can use the same ABS ring.

so...then is not necessary to buy it? sorry to be that ignorant, I want to be sure that i have everything for the upgrade.

you're saying then, that my stock differential (non-LSD 3.08) has that ring, and it can be used on a LSD 3.42 upgrade?

Depends on what year your car is? If it has the ABS ring I believe 98' and up have it. Don't take my word fot it though, Let someone else post who has more info., I'm sure FirebirdGT would know.

yes. The ABS ring goes around the edge of the differential, and all f-body differentials, be they 2- or 3- series, are the same diameter

See I knew someone would know, I didn't know that. Thanks Smoke Pather, Good info. I thought I only had ABS on my fronts.

Thanks both of you... I have a 1997 Firebird, and got a great deal on a Eaton locker with 3.42.

I hope to get it all installed by christmas.

so then is not necessary to buy it, and install the differential with a new reluctor ring. well, that'll be less thing for me to buy, since I will buy new bearings and everything.

well people, sorry to ask about this again, I didn't had the chance to install the differential on Christmas, but I'm gonna do it this summer. I wanted to ask exactly where is located this reluctor ring, on the carrier, between the gear ring and the carrier or where exactly?

                          thank you people

it's a sprocket that goes along the outer edge of the differential

personally i wouldnt use the stock cover, you can, but if i was going through all of the time and trouble, i would spend the extra cash and get a cover that holds more fluid
