One bolt head [B]ISN"T[B]going to cause it to vibrate. The factory balance on a small block lets the rods be +/- 5 grams. Thats a 10 gram difference if you get one +5 and another -5. One bolt head is what 2 or 3 grams at the most? These are not balanced that close from the factory. I've seen many a small block come out with one and sometime two converter bolts missing And they wouldn't vibrate. Meaty had to have another problem he didn't know about.

My sons 96 Firebird has had one broken off for the last 3 years with no sign of vibration yet. His car is an automatic.

I wouldn't go and put slicks on the car and launch it at 6,000 rpm with said bolt missing, but you will most likely never break anything with the stock tires.

thats kind of what i was thinking, i dont see how one bolt could throw it off that bad, but what do you think about leaving the bolt across from it out to counterbalance it? because that is something i could see happening, warping of the flywheel, etc. im still going to try my best to get the bolt out tomorrow, but i cant spend all winter on this.

Re: make fun of me here

I would put all the bolts in I could. The bolts do however only let the flywheel go on one way. The bolts are not evenly spaced, one is offset just enough to only let the flywheel bolt on with that bolt lined up. This was most likely Meaty's problem. Make sure all the bolt holes line up even the one that is broken off.

Heres what we do at our shop whenever we break a bolt. REVERSE DRILL BITS! Take a carbide reverse bit and drill it in there. The bolt should twist out. I'd go out and buy a propane torch and hit the broken bolt with that first though.

PS Wana sell me your auto? I know its got high milage but im hurting right now.

its not the balance is the fact that you are holding a large sawblade to something that is spinning at an average of 2500 RPMS constantly would you like youre bellhousing or better yet your leg to catch the saw blade when it comes loose due to the fact that it isnt attached and torqued the way it should be, yes you could probably be ok but is "probably" good enough for you, hey i may be wrong it might be fine for years but are you willing to bet your car and or life on it, as a mechanic and someone who dosent wnat to see you get fuucked up just have a mechanic get it out you have all the work done anyways to get to it, its your car and your life so its ultimatley your choice...

you can leave the flywheel bolt out if you want, but im telling ya. I was short a bolt and i thought it would be ok to just go on without it in. Had the worst vibrations EVER! Took everything out and got another bolt. Put everything back in THE EXACT SAME WAY and it completely fixed the problem.

When something is spinning that fast and it's even a couple grams off balance. well think about it. Tape a dime onto a yo-yo and see how well it works
And im pretty sure there is a difference between the rods and the crank spinning in the back of the engine

and there's a difference between an auto and a manual.
1st off the auto using different crank bolts (Manual are longer)
2nd the flex plate on an auto weighs about a pound. flywheel weighs almost 25 maybe more
                          3rd the clutch (another 30-50lbs)
4th on an auto the trans and the engine aren't directly connected, a manual is. In turn causing more vibrations with a manual

yeah, alot of good points there meaty. im probably still gunna put everything together just because its not that big of a deal to me... after all this removing/installing a tranny is nothing lol. i think with some heat and reverse drill bits i might have a fighting chance.

I've done a lot of silly things with cars, but leaving flywheel bolts out is not something I'm daring enough to do.

Like I said last night - your legs dude.

i appreciate the concern, but the only reason im going back to fix is because of what meaty said. i just don't see how 1 bolt can make the flywheel come flying off, but 7 bolts cant hold it on? just sounds your classic myth, actually, they should do that on mythbusters :naughty:
