Wtf...?

somethings been bothering me now for a while, because when i got my car painted on the estimate was the vin number and some of the options on my car, and it said 5 speed manual transmission. Well my car is an automatic. so i finally checked the door codes and sure enough, my car started out its life as a 5 speed. which is kinda scary to me. cause who in their right mind would swap a 5 speed for an automatic? and now that i've figured this out that brings up some other questions, i kno my car originally had the y87 package. but since they switched transmission before i ever had it i wonder what else is different.

So basically my question is how can i tell what kind of differential i have, and what rear end gear i have, WITHOUT opening anything up or taking it apart?

jack the rear end up letting the rear tires hang freely spin a wheel, if the other wheel spins with it = posi
you can check your gears by seeing what your rpm:speed ratio

like if you are at 2500 rpms at 84 is 3:23 with 40/17 tires

Or you can just count how many times the driveshaft turns over...if it turns over a little less than 3 and a half times, you have 3.42s. If it turns a tiny bit more than 3 times over, you have 3.08s. If it turns over 3 and about a quarter times, it has 3.23s

Did you check the VIN on the door against the VIN in the windshield? Someone might have changed the door.

there should be an id tag on the rear end. or on one of the axle shafts right next to the rear end. i looked mine up before i ordered parts to rebuild a long time ago. my tag was hard to read.

That print out that the body shop gave you simply lists standard equiptment. When i had the body of my car worked on the print out was the same way.

FYI my VIN comes out the same way. And I know from day one this car has been an auto! All that print out is; your car, year, and standard equipment. (which is a manual)

Read your door codes, and thats what you have...
